2.5 Couple is… okay. Pack dynamics are troublesome, but they change… I guess? Hero is cheered for changing sexist rules in the pack, but he’s still kind of sexist by the end of the book, he only really changes it because of the mc. Also, the hero only liked the mc because the mate bond. It’s not something I’d typically read but it’s the only thing that got be through this past week

This was fine. The human/shifter coexistence isn't explained - like I guess humans are aware of shifters but also shifters live completely separate from them? And then how is this pack's dynamics just now changing - cell phones have been around for decades and yet they're just now allowing women to use them? It just felt so needlessly backwards, I don't see how the women in this pack wouldn't have rebelled. Plus like all the past rape and shit. And I just can't believe Killian is that unaware of it. I don't like books where it takes him having his own "mate" to "wake up" and see all the problems around him.

Una is an unmated shifter with a bad leg. She and the other single women are forced to serve the pack, cook and wait tables, not allowed to own phones or leave the property without permission, give the worst place to live, etc. And this is an improvement from the past, just a few years ago, when women in the pack used to be regularly raped and degraded, many of them not allowed to wear clothes. She's never shifted until one day walking in front of the pack leader Killian she's triggered and recognizes him as her mate. Oh btw when they shift to a wolf and shift back to human they're naked. When she returns to human she's naked in front of everyone and he ridicules her and throws her out of the hall. She runs away to the forest where she goes into "heat" (this is like the omegaverse where heats make you sex crazed) but since he isn't there it eventually becomes painful. When an old crone wolf comes across her she offers to sever their mate bond. This turns out to just be temporary, but they don't know that.

Killian starts finding himself unexplainably interested in Una, he starts repeatedly seeking her out. This continues, he of course smells her arousal, until he finally claims her as his mate. When he and the pack catch her doing many banned things, like having a cell phone, sneaking into human town, etc., he decides to change the rules for everyone. This infuriates the old guard of the pack who challenge Killian, but he puts them down. And that's about it.

This introduces some characters which I'm sure get their own books. There's a young woman who is mated to a 40 year old shifter man, but he's waiting until she's more of an adult. There's also a woman who turns into a male wolf, so I guess kind of a trans character.
dark emotional sad tense medium-paced

Killian is kinda adorable - he's super protective of Una and wants to make her happy. It took him a bit to come around to accepting Una as his mate. He rejected her at the beginning but couldn't stay away from her. Killian understands that he hurt her, so he never pushed her too hard. And he really, really wanted Una to admit that he was her mate (this was so dang cute to me). Killian couldn't understand why he couldn't stay away, but their past is connected to each other (which was an interesting twist).

I tend to not enjoy wolf-shifter books, since the males tend to be alphaholes who, with their pack members, are severely lacking in mental resources, making them excruciatingly boring company. Thus, I would have passed on this but for the rave from the Smart Women Read Romance podcast, and damned if they weren’t right about it. Very enjoyable page-turner.

lighthearted fast-paced

right book, right time.
this book scratched all the itches i had.
i needed a good werewolf romance and i got one of THE BEST i’ve read so far!
at 45% i was dreading finishing this book,i didn’t want it to end. at 90% I WANTED TO CRY!!! i needed more. it goes without saying that i will be starting the rest of this series asap. there are a few couples i’m looking forward to read about!!
and i just can’t wait to re-read this when i forget a bit of the events.
the characters are so so well structured. i LOVE how we started with an albeit weak but a smart af and quiet fmc, to a whole other badass. not to mention, the detail about her busted leg made the entire plot 10x times more addicting.
i love how the mmc started off as a controlling asshole that i personally did hate, to someone who’s truly willing to change. it made me fall in love with his character more and more. it was so well structured. and omggg the details in this book are immaculate. i didn’t think a single book could check off all the points in my ‘werewolf romance’ list but somehow it did, and it did so flawlessly. all the tropes i wanted in one book, are you kidding???
