I think I enjoyed the first one better, but the last quarter of this book truly felt like it could have been a 4.5.

After finishing Orphan X, I was ready for more action and excitement. I definitely wasn't disappointed.

In this episode of the series, Evan Smoak becomes abducted and has to not only free himself, but do it with enough time to save the woman who begged the Nowhere Man for help. And then there's finding out more about the big reveal at the end of the previous book: what the hell happened with Jack?!

I did worry that there would be less ass kicking because a good chunk of the book was Evan locked up but I shouldn't have. There was plenty of violence and destruction, maybe even more than in the first book. There was also lots more character development, which I enjoyed quite a bit. I feel like I know and understand Evan much better and he's more than just an over-the-top action hero to me now. I found myself wanting him to be happy and wanting him to walk away from the life he's created for himself. But he IS a hero, after all...

I should be moving on to the third installment soon.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a new series to fall in love with!

This is book 2 in the Evan Smoak/Orphan X series. While there’s a whole story here - there’s some secondary storylines that I think are best enjoyed if you listen to book 1 first.

Evan is in big trouble and has definitely found a match in terms of an adversary who is not easily vanquished. Much of this book is spent with Evan imprisoned and trying to escape. While at first it seemed the pacing was going to be much slower - I realized that Hurwitz was making this as much of a psychological thriller as an action based one.

I enjoyed the twists and turns, the “tit for tat” between Evan & Andre, and Evan’s unwavering determination to focus on his Nowhere Man assignment despite desperately needing help himself.

Definitely looking forward to Hellbent.

Narration:
Scott Brick is fantastic as usual. His voices for Van Sciver’s voice modulating program are particularly dynamic. It’s a treat to listen to.

Loved this one as well. The middle was a bit slower, in my opinion. But it was still more than enough to keep me pulled in and entertained. Will definitely be continuing on to the next one. :)

The Story is unbelievably ridiculous and overly dramatic, but still overall okay.

a big comedown after the excellent "Orphan X". just didn't have the magic. seemed rather repetitive and that magical connection to the protagonist just wasn't there this time.
