Gory from the get go, heavy body horror elements. Plotting and pacing were inconsistent and ultimately prevented me from caring for any of the characters enough to get invested.

Wow.... what a disappointment this was. This story could have been so much more than it was but the execution of it was just terrible. By the second half i was so bored and just kept rolling my eyes, it was like the author couldn’t wait to get it finished and just put everything together in a rush. It started off well but unfortunately, the character development, explanation of The Tox and plot background were bad, it could have all been explained so much better. Characters were mentioned at the beginning of the book maybe once or twice then brought in further along as if they were one of the main characters? And Reese’ Dad? He went missing years ago and then suddenly just reappears... as a tree? Then never really mentioned again? Ok. The romance in this story (if you can call that) also just appears out of nowhere and never really explained either. I just don’t think there was much thought to much going into this book, it was a great idea overall but the delivery just ruined the whole thing.
So disappointed because this was one of my most anticipated releases this year.
I hate giving such bad reviews of a book but we can’t love them all i suppose.

This was so good and so weird and I really liked it
I was a little bit apprehensive starting this book because I had read mixed reviews but I honestly loved it. It took me a little while to get used to the writing style (is it due to the French translation or the original writing? Who knows?) but after that it was just a fun, gory, gay wild ride!
I think I really like body horror-y stuff so this was my jam. I actually don't read that much horror even though I think I'd like it because I don't know where to start in my search for diverse, non-offensive horror but this made me want to read more because I really enjoyed the gory stuff.
It was also super gay and I loved it. The characters were all messy, dangerous girls and the main f/f relationship was super messy too, but I mean, in these circumstances, what else would you expect from these girls?
I wanted more from the ending. Objectively I think it's quite a good decision to end it where it did end, but it also leaves many many questions without answer and it frustrates me a little bit.
EDIT: You know what, I sat with my feelings about this ending for a while longer and I feel like I like it more now. It doesn't give out all the answers, and I feel like it's because it doesn't take the reader into account, not over the characters. The characters give less of a fuck about explaining what happened to them than finding a solution to avoid it, so they don't take time to find too many answers. I like that. I like that the characters' motivations are more important than the readers' need for clear answers/resolution.

Graphic: Death and Terminal illness
Moderate: Abandonment
i hated this book, it was very meh. The only good thing was the natural lesbian representation, felt normally done. Otherwise it was nothing note worthy, waste of time to me. So many loose ends left, i got no answers to any of them.chrisrin's review against another edition

I am still grappling with the ending, but I found this to be a fast, engrossing read. I'm not entirely sure I'm satisfied with what happened and why it happened and may return to this review later when I have finished making sense of the book.

“I think I’d been looking for it all my life, a storm in my body to match the one in my head.”
➽ Corrupted forests, glowing lichen, creatures with twisted bodies, abandoned labs, cold granite shorelines
✰ Unique & fitting setting, lesbians, mid-light body horror
