Received an ARC on NetGalley and was the perfect MDW read before release day tomorrow
So many different storylines at first I had a hard time following them all and trying to figure out how they tied together. Love how it all connected though and was truly hooked the whole time. What an insanely corrupt group of people and example of being careful what you get involved with - once you’re in, there’s really only one way out. Highly recommend everyone order and get for release day, 5/28

Alex Finlay does it again. I was hooked from early on and almost finished this in on sitting. It was fast paced (with short chapters) and a plot that kept me entertained. I have said this over and over and will continue to do so, I'm a sucker for multiple POVs. I think they all brought something to this story. I thought it was easy to follow along. I don't know if I'd call this a thriller...but if you are interested in a mob style book, I highly suggest this one!!
I listened as I read. I thought the narrators did a great job!
Thank you NetGalley, Macmillian, Minotaur Books, and Alex Finlay for the advanced copy of If Something Happens to Me in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you, NetGalley, for an advanced audio copy of “If Something Happens to Me” by Alex Finlay for a review.
Alex Finlay is one of those hit or miss authors for me. I loved The Night Shift, but found Every Last Fear just okay, and stayed away from What Have We Done based on the reviews.
I enjoyed If Something Happens to Me! I didn’t see the main twist coming, and I really liked how the characters became connected as the story progressed. I think this will be a big thriller for the summer. I blew through it in less than 2 days, and while I’d recommend it to fellow readers/listeners, I’m not sure if it’ll stay with me long term.

Alex Finlay has done it once again, If Something Happens to Me is a masterpiece. Told via multiple points of view and timelines, the story weaves perfectly together. Eventually, your jaw drops when you find out how everything is connected. If you haven't read anything by Alex Finlay yet, you should.
Ryan Richardson will never forget his past, five years ago Ryan and his girlfriend Ali were attacked - she's taken from him and he'll never forget her piercing screams. With the help of a good lawyer Ryan is off the hook but his past is not forgotten. Years later on a trip to Italy Ryan receives a phone call stating that Ali's car has been found with dead bodies in it, but neither are Ali. All that was found was a letter written in Ali's handwriting: If Something Happens to Me. To top things off, Ryan sees the face of the man who's been haunting his dreams since that night.
This is such a twisty thriller, once you stop, you won't want to put it down. As a reader, you sit there and start to wonder how everything is connected - there's a point where something is revealed and I was shocked. I'm not usually a fan of mob stories, but this one got to me. I will admit, the story was a little hard to follow along with at the start just with all the characters, but I promise it all makes sense. Get through the first 1/4 of the book and you will be hooked!

Thank you so much to Minotaur Books & St Martin's Press for an advance copy of this book!
Thank you so much to Macmillan Audio for the complimentary copy!
This book will be published on May 28th, 2024.
This is my third Alex book (still need to read his debut) and as much as I loved this last book, this one may have dethrone the prior. I was hooked from the start and with the fast paced short chapters, it really helped move the story along.
"Whoever said if you're seeking revenge dig two graves - one for your enemy and one for yourself.- had it almost right."
Similar to his last book, Finlay broke the book down into 3 point of views (Poppy, Ryan and Shane) which all eventually converge. As I was reading, I was trying to figure out how all were connected (of course I was wrong). I am not sure which storyline I enjoyed following the most as at different points I was tapping on my screen to hurry to get to the next chapter as often times they were left. There were a lot of side characters that were thrown at you and that sometimes made it hard to remember who was who and what role they played.
I paired my reading with the audiobook. I was very happy that they had 3 different narrators for each of the point of views. Helen Laser, John Pirhalla and Paul Dateh all did an excellent job with their character. What doesn't always happen with narrators is that they sounded like their age. There was a character that was clearly older than the other two and they had a older sounded voice which made it feel believable. Their voices mixed with Finlay's writing made the listening experience enjoyable!
This book is such a suspenseful ride from start to the end. I think this book will be great for summer & readers will eat it up!
PS - I am always happy when Philadelphia is a setting in a book!

This story is told through multiple points-of-view from narrators in Leavenworth, Kansas, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a couple different countries in Europe. There is a young man trying to move forward with his life after being a suspect in his high school girlfriend's death, a new deputy sheriff who has returned to her hometown and thrown in the middle of a complicated investigation, and a gangster dealing with difficult situations in his "business" and in his personal life.
I'm purposely not giving many details so I don't accidentally spoil anything, but even though a few of the connections between characters seem random at first, be patient because everything comes together! The book has a well-balanced mixture of likable characters and others I didn't care for. My favorite character is Deputy Sheriff Poppy McGee and it would be great if she appeared in a future book leading a new investigation. I liked the action of the story, even when I had to suspend disbelief or wish some characters would have made different choices. There is a long, detailed epilogue to wrap things up, and I'm glad the author doesn't go the obvious route with everything at the end. There are some violent scenes, but I still recommend this book to readers looking for a fast-paced thriller.
I received an advance copy of this book at no cost from NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Minotaur Books. My review is voluntary and unbiased.

If Something Happens to Me, by Alex Finlay, is a fast-paced thriller with short chapters and multiple POVs. It’s easy to binge and keeps you guessing throughout.
Ali went missing without a trace, and her boyfriend Ryan was accused of her murder/disappearance, but was never charged. Five years later, her car is found submerged in a lake with the body of two men inside and a note in Ali’s handwriting that reads “If something happens to me…”.
This book follows three storylines in three different locations. I listened to the audio book, and the story is told by three narrators: Helen Laser, John Pirhalla, and Paul Dateh. Having three narrators significantly helps keep track of the three POVs/storylines. All of the narrators did an excellent job reading/playing their parts.
If you’re like me, and like to speed up your audiobooks, the narrators were easily understood at 2x speed (at least to me).
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for an advance copy of the audio book.

I really enjoyed this fast-paced thriller by Alex Finlay!
The novel starts with the MC Ryan, who lived through the trauma of his high school girlfriend Ali being kidnapped out of their vehicle five years ago. No body was found, but of course Ryan is the primary suspect. Ryan cannot recall most of the details surrounding the event, but he has retained an an image of the man who attacked them. Although Ryan was never charged due to lack of evidence, he changes his name and moves on with his life to help escape his past.
Fast forward five years and Ryan has graduated college and enrolled in law school. He is traveling Europe with several classmates when he receives a call that Ali's missing car has been found, though her body is not inside. Later during his trip, he also believes that he sees the man who attacked them. Even more shocking, the police find an envelope in Ali's submerged vehicle labeled “If something happens to me," spurring the unraveling of this mystery.
I loved seeing how all the players in this thriller come together at the end. I particularly appreciated the audiobook, which has multiple great narrators. Overall, this is a great mystery if you prefer:
*Dual timelines
*European setting
*Multiple POVs
*Mafia/organized crime
