To my surprise, amazingly written. I'm not a fan of older books, but this still held it's wittiness and humor. There's a lot of wonderful lines and moments in this book. It started strong, but ended weakly for me, where it got too prosey and historic--for understandable reasons, but it cut me off from the magic the beginning and middle had. Still, it was a very enjoyable read.

Very entertaining (if occasionally improbable) melodrama set during the French Revolution with sword fights. Fans of Ellen Kushner's Riverside novels will enjoy.

This book is set in the lead-up to the French Revolution, and the main characters spend time discussing issues involving systemic abuse of power, the appropriateness of violent protest, and related issues -- so although it's intended as a diverting adventure story, I wouldn't recommend it at this particular moment for someone seeking a diverting adventure story to take their mind off things.
