The Prank

This story has an original setting, a TV game show production company that works in the manner of Jeremy beadles practical jokes on the public.
These jokes do always have a dark side, and this novel explores this theme and Tells the story of one victim,s family wanting revenge.
there is a great protagonist, London is well described, there plenty of twists and turns and tense scenes to keep the story bouncing along.
The ending is no surprise however, and the mystery person horsehead can be quite easily worked out. The family problems also don’t ring quite true.
Also there are glaring technological mistakes. No film company ever makes one show, they have portfolios, and the extreme luxurious lifestyle the shows creator enjoys just could not happen on the back of one shows income, it’s just not that easy. Ditto how the protagonist just walks into a Top media PA Job, that was way too far fetched.
This is an enjoyable light read and I would read the same author again, but there is nothing mind blowing here.

El lost her father to suicide and after a chance encounter with with the TV producer, Jim Valente and a fly-away comment by ber uncle, she fears there was more to her father's death.

After some digging around, El believes Valente and his TV show Pranksters are what drove her father to take his own life.

Driven by anger and the need for revenge, El seeks ideas on the dark web. Here she meets a guy who calls himself 'Horsehead', who is able to get her a fake identity and place her in a job as Valente's PA. From there she is determined to do whatever she can to destroy the man she believes is responsible for her father's death...

The Prank is a fast paced, revenge thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep you in suspense, and makes you question everyone. I was on edge thinking what's going to happen next, it was exciting and totally pulled me out of my reading slump!

The interaction between El and Horsehead was great to read. It injected some unexpected humour and had me laughing out loud.

What a wonderful debut novel and I look forward to reading more from Liv. I loved it!

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this because I hadn't seen anyone I know read it or talk about it, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was very fast-paced, the chapters are short, and the suspense is there throughout. I guessed what was going on by the end, but for a good two thirds of the book, I had no idea how it would end and enjoyed all of the twists and reveals.

I’ve been desperate to read this book as soon as I heard about it as the premise sounded brilliant and I’m very happy to say it didn’t disappoint!

Chapters are short, pacy and always end on a mini cliffhanger leaving you wanting more, which is most likely why I ended up late into the night reading as I just couldn’t put it down. You will need to know what happens next – it’s so fast paced and full of intrigue.

El is a bit of a lost soul since losing both her mum and dad, with the death of her dad hitting her the hardest. As she discovers the cause for his death this is when she begins her journey into the murky world of revenge and secret online websites to help formulate a plan.

The online conversations she has with a man called ‘Horsehead’ were especially good. I really enjoyed their interactions and I was definitely laughing out loud at one point in regards to a well known mumsnet reference!

The events and situations that El gets herself into had me on the edge of my seat and as we get nearer to the end I did start to put some things together, however my guesses were incorrect which is always good as nothing worse than guessing the ending. The author did a brilliant job of keeping the suspense up until the very end.

If you’re looking for a fast paced mystery / thriller with a unique premise then you need to read this!

I have especially loved reading thrillers this year and this book is definitely one of my favourites! It kept me up reading when I should have been sleeping and I even read it standing at the cooker making dinner!
It’s dark, intense, intelligent and has all the twists and turns that you want from a thriller. It literally had me holding my breath at times!

El, is a brilliant main character. She is relatable to and so heartbroken, tortured and driven. She shows such a strength throughout. All the characters have such depth and so much research must have gone into this as it shows on every page. I cannot wait to read more of Livs work!

“A harmless prank. A tragic outcome. Now, the joke’s on them...”

Pranks are supposed to be harmless fun. A little mischievous joke to elicit embarrassment, confusion or discomfort in the unknowing victim. But what if that silly, little prank had devastating, irreversible consequences? The Prank is a timely, suspenseful and addictive thriller, conveying the deep and dark lengths a person will go to for revenge.

I was instantly hooked after the first few pages. I enjoyed the premise of this psychological thriller, especially because it was the protagonist seeking retribution against the antagonist. I found it interesting to be inside El’s mind and was compelled to keep reading as her motivations for revenge were gradually revealed. There were some tense scenes that had me holding my breath, whilst others had me laughing out loud. The humour and banter helped to break up some of the darker themes and were pitched at the perfect moments. I’m very much a character driven reader and I genuinely liked all of the central characters. They were fleshed out well and all had their own distinct voices. I even hated to love Jim (ew) and I found the dynamic between El and her online ‘partner in crime’ Horsehead fantastic. Not knowing Horsehead’s identity nor their true intentions facilitated further intrigue and suspense throughout. Importantly, this review would not be complete without me expressing my love for Jim’s dog, Gertie. What a cutie!

I initially gave The Prank 4.5 stars, but rounded this up to 5 stars because I really enjoyed my reading experience and honestly, I’m still in awe that this is the author’s debut novel. Liv Matthews is an incredibly talented writer and this book simply oozes magnificence. I can’t wait to read more of her work in the future.

If you love an intense, revenge thriller containing strong characters and a sprinkle of humour, then you need to add The Prank to your TBR. Thank you to the lovely team at Welbeck Publishing for my gifted, uncorrected proof copy of The Prank in exchange for an honest review. I genuinely can’t wait for people to get their hands on a copy of this in March 2021! ✨
