Read it while moping and, with most of Bukowski's poetry, found it a great companion to my self-pity.

I'm a big fan of Bukowski poetry, and so for me this was more of the same good stuff I'm used to from "the people's poet." I read this one on the heels of reading Bukowski's novel "Women." Conveniently, many of the poems in "Love is a Dog From Hell" are about the women that Bukowski wrote about in "Women!" It was a great parallel to read "Women" and then read the poetry style interpretation of these same personalities. I reccomend reading these two works in that order.

In "Love is a Dog..." I marked thirteen poems as particularly amusing, insightful, and enjoyable. That's not an overwhelming number in relation to how many are in this volume, which is why this was only a 4-star read for me.

Poems of note to me are:
quiet clean girls in gingham dresses
alone with everybody
cockroach
traffic signals
coupons
luck
trenchwarfare
the insane always loved me
the crunch
soul
$$$$$$$
now, if you were teaching creative writing, what would you tell them?
rain or shine

You can tell that Bukowski hasn't hit his full stride as a poet with this volume, but it's a good portrait of what some of his initial poetry looked like.

i don't know what i expected from a man in the 70s. lesson learned

Bukowski's poetry is like the coffee you love to drink in the early morning. You taste it, it's hot, it's good, warms you up and instantly makes you want to run to the toilet. He's that kind of poet. Thought-provoking, fun, sarcastic, but also miserable, harrowing and batshit crazy.
He was the man.

idk how to feel abt this. charles was drunk asf but also a hopeless romantic. that’s all i gotta say abt this
