I did not finish this, but I made it halfway and then just could not. Burrowes is a writer new to me, but she is regularly auto recommended to me and she is one of the crowd of lawyers who write romance, which usually is a good match for this lawyer who reads romance. But. It was so dull! And it was so darn overwritten! I wanted to like it. I liked the focus on the ways in which mental illness was (mis)handled in that era but Constance and Robert are dull as dirt and the endless scenes where nothing relevant happens compounded the problem. My kingdom for some witty repartee.

I tried to read this because it has epilepsy representation but reading about epilepsy from a historical perspective was painful. Suffice it to say, we’ve come a long way. Thank goodness! I put this down because I ultimately didn’t want to read about the madhouse and the falling sickness and a life that I coul have been living, but for the miracle of modern medicine. Too hard.

I liked this overall. Wish it had been more romance-centered, because I went into it thinking it was going to be more about Constance/Robert's getting together, but they actually are pretty on board with liking each other by...idk, 1/3 of the way through the book? And then the story shifts to being more about their two external struggles and facing them as a couple. Which is sweet and all, but it made the pace feel weird, like this was a prequel slapped together with a different novel, but not enough for either to feel fully satisfying on their own. The ending goes by in a blur and gets sewn up with a deus ex machina-like save that I think had an attempt at foreshadowing, but didn't work out for me.
I liked the side cast a lot, and will probably read the next one as I liked Stephen.

I loved Robert/Robbie in book four so much so knew this was going to be a good one. We also learn more about Constance and how they meet before their siblings got involved. AGH, this one will tag at your heartstrings like nothing else. Robert has epilepsy and being it 1800s his own father sent him off to be dead. You will love Constance as she learns to fight for him as well as her self on their journey. Of course loved all the side characters aka both their families. Always in the middle of it all.
These I guess you could read maybe as standalone but please don't as you will miss so much of the backstory to make this so wonderful. I can't wait for more of this series!! I'm so now into this family I need to see every last one of them in HEA status.
Overall, 4 stars and 3 steam
Thanks so much to Netgalley and Forever for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Robert is a duke who after years spend in a asylum he must now take his place and act as a Duke.
Constance is his neighbor but they had met years ago, they were friendly at the most unfriendly and secluded place.
Robert is struggling to find his place in the world and overcome certain difficulties, he wants to be a duke worthy of the title despite what people might say he knows that he can.
Constance has a secret that has consumed her life, she must guard it from everyone. She makes sure to not make an impression and live her life in solitude. But when Robert gets close she will have to decide if she will let him in or if she will run.
Robert and Constance is an unconvinient couple with a troubled past but with a lot of love to give and a connection neither of them can deny.
I liked how taken Robert was with Constance and didn't hesitate to go after what he wanted. Constance was more cautious but her feelings were equally strong.
The plot is very interesting from the beginning and it kept getting better until the very end.

Robert is the rightful heir and Duke of Rothhaven.....but society thought him dead. Lady Constance Wentworth knew Robert during her short time as a maid long ago, During that brief time Lady Constance changes his life, and others. Rothhaven is rescued by his brother and he lives for years at home until he is forced to reclaim the mantle of Duke. For Rothhaven it is not an easy task as he suffers from epilepsy, an illness most take for madness. Rothhaven and Constance must fight for their love but also for his sanity as conniving solicitors attempt to take control.
This is the second in the series and while you do not have to read the first book, I felt i would have been a bit lost without it. You get additional background into Robert and his relationship with his brother.
I adored Robert. He was given a rough hand but that never made him bitter or mean, he was always kind and selfless. Lady Constance was a no nonsense lady who has made mistakes in her past but is looking to fix them. I love her extended Wentworth family and Robert's brother. Throw in a bunch of nosy neighbors and you have a really good read!

Let me begin by saying, I do enjoy a good regency romance. Hence, why I picked up this book.
I am afraid this story didn't really grab me the way others do, and so I only read about half of the book. However, I do have to say how I like that this book delves into topics, like mental health, not usually mentioned in other novels. I have read other books by Grace Burrows and think she is a great regency romance writer, therefore I will try (to try) to read this again at a future date.
