"The same ignoramuses who think the falling sickness is a sign of God's disfavor think the poor are lazy and stupid. You never saw a harder-working, more resourceful, wily, self-discipline, and determined batch of people than the nearly destitute. Before the hope gets kicked out of them, they are unstoppably ingenious and tireless in their efforts to survive."

Robert was sent to an abusive private asylum because of his falling sickness. His father put out that he was dead. He survived 10 years, before his brother discovers him and rescues him. Robert had been contemplating suicide when Constance was hired as a maid, at the asylum. Her spirit and caring saved him and he battles his phobias for her.

Enjoyed the characters.

Oof, definitely the worst of the bunch (so far). I feel like I’ve been pretty flexible with historic accuracy and fanciful events, but this book was so implausible in so many domains that I couldn’t overlook it. Backstory and emotions are repeated ad nauseum. The pinnacle of the plotline is somehow cliché and unrealistic.
SpoilerI doubt even Stephan could get a man with everything riding on the outcome of a trial to get so drunk during the lunch recess that he admits his entire ploy in the witness box.
It feels like a half-hearted effort.

Man this thing was long. I checked this out of the library because I wanted a ROMANCE novel, and this thing was a romance NOVEL. I liked the characters and all but sheesh - not the lighthearted romp I was hoping for. Lots of dialogue and not much action so my attention strayed a few times.
