Very similar to Anne of Green Gables in terms of set up (imaginative and creative orphan girl with a dramatic streak and a love of nature is taken in with a new family, including a strict and somewhat cold old lady and a soft spoken understanding older man), and structure (mostly vignettes through the years as our heroine grows up, goes to school, makes friends, etc with some little side plots of other characters, often romantic in nature), but different enough to be its own thing as well. Emily is her own person, different from Anne, and her life at New Moon quickly takes a colour of its own despite the similarities. I really liked Emily, though I found it a bit harder to get attached to the other characters. It is at times, a bit more dramatic and OTT but in a way that made me smile, more than annoyed me. This is the “Are you a Jane or Charlotte” of the LM Montgomery ‘verse.

I haven't read a book with a character so relatable in years. I can't really put into words every little thing in this book that stood out to me, but I'm very excited to continue the series. She really gets it (it being how I process life).

Never have I read a book with such gratuitous use of the word "pussy."

Seriously though, this was cute. Basically Anne of Green Gables without all the gay subtext.

Another brilliant character that you can't help falling in love with. Wonderful.

Fans of Anne of Green Gables will like this book. Emily as a character is very similar to Anne and has similar troubles (saying too much, dreamer, rash decisions) although different circumstances.
