Highly enjoyable. I liked the unique names, how literary works are featured in the alternate culture, and the warping of time was a neat concept. I also liked the narrator's voice in this audiobook edition.

As I mentioned earlier, I would title this book "The Redemption of Mr. Rochester" instead of the Eyre Affair because after reading this book, I suddenly feel like I'm in love with Mr. Rochester when I didn't quite like him (to put it mildly) at all in Jane Eyre.
The world of Thursday Next, to put it simply, is a mess. It is so messy I confess I have trouble comprehending what happened, especially at the beginning. Usually, a reader is introduced to the novel's world, then we gradually venture through the world along with our heroes and heroines (at least that's how I am used to reading a book). The moment I entered the world of Thursday Next, I found myself being dragged into the middle of a chaotic world, completely clueless as to what's happening but have little time to fathom as events keep happening. Hence, my only choice is to ride along the tides and let myself either drown in confusion, or somehow find myself thrown back to shore. I am glad I made it to safety in the end, and even enjoyed my little adventure with Thursday, the Special Ops, and even the Rochesters.
As to whether I shall reenter the world of Thursday Next for another adventure, I am hesitant, mostly because I think there are several elements that make this novel work so well but the fun may not be present in a second book --- the villain. Hades is such a brilliant villain, so full of himself and evil to the bone. It's a shame Florde cramped too much info into one volume, leaving little time for more character exploration but no book could be perfect, and while this is an enjoyable read, it cannot get a perfect rating from me.

From the description: "Suspenseful and outlandish, absorbing and fun, The Eyre Affair is a caper unlike any other..."
Pretty much this.^^^
It starts off a bit confusing and slow, but when the plot finally starts unfolding, you're in for a weird, ridiculous ride. "This feels extremely British," I kept thinking, over and over.
It reminds me a smidge of Hitchiker's Guide in its absurdity, intelligence, and chaotically cohesive plot.
Definitely going to read more in the series!

Can't believe this is over twenty years old! Read it back when it first came out, still love it just as much. Have jumped straight into [b:Lost in a Good Book|18870927|Lost in a Good Book (Thursday Next, #2)|Jasper Fforde|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1384955005l/18870927._SY75_.jpg|1918119] and can't wait to re-read every last one of them.
