Well, I'm not the target audience, so I guess that has a lot to do with my initial reaction. I understand why my ten year old son adores this book, but I have to say that I was a little disappointed with the main character, Greg Heffley. I kept hoping that he'd have a little redeeming quality, but he's just not the nicest of kids... but, that being said, there is definitely an engaging sense of humor to this book that is just perfect for older kids. I had seen the movie before, and I have to say that Greg came off as more likable on screen. Book 2 is next for me, so maybe Greg will start to grow on me a little more.
Aidan read it so quickly---and loved it, so I found myself reading it. His school librarian had already given him a few later in the series before he found this one. I know it's popular, and I can see why. I even laughed when the father ended up getting his own son with his Halloween prank meant for teen-trick-or-treaters. But the main character is so dislikable. I don't expect every book Aidan reads to have model protagonists or a positive message, but this book had so much of what I don't want---sarcastic kids, mean siblings, lying to parents, etc.
Man, I sound old.

I "met" this book through the eyes of a middle school kid who appeared extremely disappointed when I had to tell her all 11 copies were checked out of our library. Am now reading it for a class.
My family looked at me strangely as I chuckled my way through it. Felt like I was in jr high again. Written as a journal/graphic novel, it effectively takes you into the concerns and thought processes of that world. Bullies, interest in the opposite sex, cooties, parental discipline and pressure ... all is handled with humor and sensitivity. Excellent.
Font appears as if a real person wrote the letters and the drawings mimic a doodler. Word choices are simple and the scenarios should allow most kids to highly relate to them.
