This is popular? I didn't expect an anti-hero main character for a kids book. Woefully dreadful.

I love that so many of my students love these books. Just now finally getting around to reading it, I get the appeal. It's funny with an interesting and accessible format - exactly what many reluctant readers need.
This book is definitely for middle schoolers only. I read it because lots of kids I know have said they like it and I wanted to see what it was all about. I don't necessarily love that this kid is not very nice to his "friend" but it does seem to accurately portray friendships at that age. I would only suggest it if you want to connect with kids that have read this book.
I read this because it is my sons’s favorite book series and he wanted to start a family book club.
I can see why he likes it, parts of it are goofy and funny.
I wish the main character wasn’t such a bully and I don’t super love how he acts, but it is what it is. Not every book he loves is going to be one I’m crazy about and that’s okay.
At least I don’t have the stinky cheese touch.
