I felt it tough to get through this book, I am a fan of Grisham and usually love his books. The ending left me unsatisfied…

This one was published in the year 2000. I think I have a neighbor who has been cleaning his bookshelves, and deciding it was time to donate his collection to my Little Free Library Shed. He definitely has been making this neighborhood (for the most part) happy with his decision.

On to this story…

3 ex-judges, now imprisoned, have a bit of a side-business in prison of blackmailing some very prominent men who still live their lives in the closet.

Well, what do you think will happen when one of those men that these ex-judges decide to blackmail is going for a very top government position? Do you think that person is going to let their secret be known?

And, what do you think that person is going to want to have done with their criminal blackmailers?

Is there really a safe place to hide?

So, look at it this way. We have criminal judges. We have a criminal at the top of government being blackmailed. Who are readers supposed to root for?

I'm not sure I really see the point of some of these Grisham books. This can't be considered a thriller since nothing thrilling happens, and it's not a mystery, it's basically just a long winded story, and not a very interesting one at that. It's as if three old men are sitting down to tell their tale of being corrupt unlikable people that scam from a comfortable prison. There's a presidential race going on and supposedly something nasty is going to happen to cause a world war, but that never actually happens. It's just a guy running for president with a lot of money, and some corrupt judges in prison. I thought there would eventually be more, but there is not. Either way I didn't care about the backstory of the judges, or the daily workings of their alcoholic lawyer. This is the second Grisham book in a row with unlikable alcoholics. I guess some people find that easy to relate to, I don't find it endearing, and I don't feel sorry for the characters, I just want them all to go away. As a story about a scam three unlikable men perpetrate, this succeeds, unfortunately, that is not nearly good enough for me to call this a decent book. I mean you have to have some reason to continue reading, or some character that you love to read about, and there is nothing like that here at all.

I like that Grisham's books have many characters and plot twists but this one was hard to get into because you never knew who you were supposed to be rooting for. Everybody seemed, at the very least, shady and dishonest. The killing of one character made absolutely no sense when other characters were allowed to live. It was frustrating.

Started a little slow for me, but ended up enjoying it.

I feel like there should've been some consequences for the scam the brethren ran.....I feel like this book ended without a proper conclusion.

I always thought I knew where it was going...but was only half right

Kurang bisa dipercaya kalau buku ini ditulis oleh John Grisham. Nggak ada greget. Padahal plotnya menceritakan sisi lain seorang kandidat presiden AS. Alurnya lambat. Settingnya kurang deskriptif. Tokohnya begitu hitam-putih. Jagoannya sudah pasti akan menang. Pembaca kecewa.

Got this book as a brown paper wrapped surprise from the local library. I’ve read some Grisham in the past and enjoyed them. This one was not that good. Felt like maybe he needed to write to meet a deadline and just wasn’t very interested in it but had to produce something. Do not recommend.
