I know I'm super late reading this! The Brethren was a really good read. Most of it moved at a pretty steady pace, though there were some points that were a little slow. Once the two stories merged, it really picked up. I'm conflicted about how the story ended. On one hand, it felt a bit anticlimactic. I wanted more action, I suppose. On the other hand, there was enough of a twist to give it an unexpected ending.
This is my third(?) John Grisham book and I'm looking forward to reading more!

Well, this was not very good. Partly because it hasn't aged very well, partly because it feels kind of amateurish and silly. Not sure if maybe Grisham was kind of trying to channel Carl Hiaasen some of the time but it reminds us the what Hiaasen does isn't as easy as it looks.
Why do I say it hasn't aged well? The plot hinges around the idea that a presidential campaign would be derailed by evidence that a middle aged widower had a written correspondence with a person he believed to be a young gay man. Hard to believe that even in the '90s that was real...
On the other hand, the primitive slapdash description of the CIA's manipulation of the presidential campaign was just lazy. The CIA officers actually call themselves "Agent whatever." Just no. Come on.

A tale of how three men in prison extort closeted gay men, including a leading presidential candidate.
This is another good legal and political thriller from Grisham that follows two seemingly separate stories that find themselves becoming more and more intertwined with blackmail, conspiracy, and of course greed for both money and power driving it all. There were lots of twists and turns, even twists and turns on the twists and turns so it did get a little complicated keeping track of everyone but I found if I just kept reading I would figure it out.
Just could not get into it, too much political stuff for me. Maybe I'll pick it up again soon.
This was the very first novel I finished since this was for my Literary Criticism in College. I love the storyline and didn't expect the twists. I just love this one.

This is as story of three judges who are in prison together who blackmail closeted homosexual male pen pals. At the same time, "powers that be" are rigging the election for President.
This is a reread for me which is rare. I would say this is the first book I read that I viewed as an "adult" book. It was on the bookshelf in my room I shared with my little brother. I have no idea whose book it originally was. On a hot, triple digit afternoon, my brother and I were pushed out of the house and forced outside. We sat in the garage with the door open and I started this book. The homosexual plot line had me feeling like I was doing something I wasn't supposed to.
I didn't enjoy this story as much as when I first read it, but its classic Grisham. Fun and fast paced.

I read half of it. I didn't care for it and thought it was a little gross.
