The Silent Wife

A.S.A. Harrison

3.03 AVERAGE

This was an interesting read that started off slow and then at some point, I simply couldn't put it down. I bought this at a sale at my local library for $2, for a toonie I felt like it wouldn't make me upset whether it was a good or bad read. Thankfully, it wasn't bad. This story is told from two different perspectives, the man and the woman's. The characters felt a bit wooden, but eventually, I felt like they were fleshed out a bit. Todd I simply didn't like at all, but I was curious enough to see what was to become of him and his philandering. Jodi took me by surprise and there was an explanation 3/4 of the way through on why she is the way she is or what I thought was an explanation, but then the grand reveal at the very end told me the truth which explained even further why she was the way she was throughout. This is no "the next Gone Girl" I really wish the publishers/authors would stop saying that, nothing can compare to Gone Girl, at least nothing I have read thus far. This author also sadly died after this books success, which makes me sad for she may have written even better books to come (and it is just sad in general that she may not have seen the success of this novel and she was also a fellow Torontonian). I was torn throughout on whether to give it a 3 or 4 star read...it is more 3.5-4 to me mostly because it grabbed my attention in atleast the last 1/2 of the novel. If anyone is interested, you are welcome to borrow it.

good beach/ plane/ vacation read

Had so much potential but fell short

At first just seems like a domestic drama, but becomes a thriller at the very end. I enjoyed the drama of it all and the anticipation of when it would become a thriller.

Much more psychological than I expected. Not much like Gone Girl. It's a slow read, but I enjoyed it enough.

Too much telling, not enough showing.....which seems an odd comment about a book that is replete with description of the couple's chi-chi lifestyle. None of the characters was sympathetic. I'm not sure it's a great authorial strategy for the reader to decide that the characters deserve whatever disaster is coming to them.

The Silent Wife started out slow, picked up in the middle if the book, and completly dropped on in the end. There were a few details in the book that I didn't see coming, but overall, the book was very predictable. Nothing close to 'Gone Girl'. Overall okay for entertainment but not a thiller masterpiece.

Strong character development: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

The Silent Wife wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't exactly say it was a thriller. I feel like there was a lot of filler in this book. I got bored at times. Over all it was an average book.
