⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. Second books in trilogies are hit and miss, but this one moved the story along well. Without spoiling it for those who haven’t started the series (and if you haven’t, DO IT!), Kestra suffers a huge setback but eventually discovers something major at her disposal. Things with Simon heat up, and the end has me ready to crack open book 3.

When Kestra fails at her mission and loses her memory, she begins a long journey to discover who she is and who she can trust. Simon remains steadfast in his belief in her but a series of battles tear the pair apart. Though they each have responsibilities, they want nothing more than to reconnect.

This book was nonstop action. There wasn't much in these pages that weren't important to the plot line, making it a great page turner and an easy weekend read.

Very happy to know book 3 is already out and I can get right back into it!

3.5
Just decide

I really enjoyed Jennifer Nielsen's Ascendance series, and when I was in the mood for YA fantasy again this year I turned to this series. I wasn't sure if I would read the whole series after the first book (I loved the first book in the Ascendance series and felt a little disappointed in this one), but I'm glad I kept going because I tore through books 2 and 3 of this series!

The audiobook narrators in this series were great!

I also learned this was the author's first YA series so it makes sense why the first book wasn't as strong as her other books.

3.5 didn't quite enjoyed it but still interested to keep reading till the last book
adventurous challenging dark emotional

Diverse cast of characters: Yes
adventurous dark emotional funny hopeful mysterious tense medium-paced

Good continuation of the series! (But, let's be honest, it can't top TAS *wink*) Still, can't wait to read the next book!
adventurous emotional lighthearted mysterious tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I'll put this one at 3.5 stars, rounded down.

I hate memory loss tropes. It makes all the work that was done in the first novel feel like we have to go through it allllll over again.

I began to dislike most of the characters and wished for more worldbuilding to understand the magic and how it corrupts.

I'll still move on to book 3 but I'm hoping for something more.
