I didn’t hate this but it was a brainless page turner to me. It dragged on a little long and some of the plot lines were borderline ridiculous.

The protagonist/narrator frequently notices women's "boobs" (which makes me think the author is a boob). Conveniently, all persons of interest for multiple cases all over the world show up in a Turkish town at the same time as our hero. If one can overlook these flaws, it's an interesting story with good pacing.

A lot of this book is reasonably paced. Short and concise chapters during the first half kept me reading, but by the time the protagonist was reminiscing about god-knows-what at a rave in Bodrum, complete with reference to "chicks" and their lack of underwear, and cool guys smoking blunts before abseiling down a cliff (or something?!) I neither knew nor cared what was happening. It reads like action film fan fiction. Even the adoption storyline is lame and unbelievable. I wanted a thriller to hold my attention, having got a bit bored of literary fiction, and this just disappointed me.

I've been asked a few times: 'if there were a book you could read again without knowing what happens', I Am Pilgrim is my answer ten times out of ten.
What a story.
What a story.
I AM PILGRIM by Terry Hayes
700 pages of ups and downs, twists and turns, and complicated action that you won't be able to put down. Truly a MUST READ for any lover of suspense.
In Terry Hayes' debut "Pilgrim" tracks a terrorist all across the world, but the story starts with a gruesome murder mystery in New York City. The victim is found with every trace of her identity destroyed; her body face-down in a tub full of acid, teeth pulled, fingerprints removed. Readers learn all about the retired spy who is called in to work on the case and are taken from New York City through Europe and the Middle East.
At times, I AM PILGRIM was difficult to follow. There were several things happening - both past and present - and it was a bit confusing for me to see how they fit into the storyline. In the end, Hayes did a great job of tying it all together so that all of my questions were answered.
I'm not usually a fan of spy thrillers, but I found myself drawn in to I AM PILGRIM by the characters. A young man who witnesses the beheading of his father. A retired NYPD cop that was a 9/11 hero. A retired spy specialist that can't quite walk away.
Being released tomorrow (May 27, 2014) this book would make an awesome gift for Father's Day!

I am very conflicted about this book. On the one hand, the premise and story-line is very different and the layout was something that I found pleasure in. The author "seemed" very knowledgeable, however certain parts just felt like I got stuck with a splinter that I just couldn't get out. The kind of feeling where it doesn't overtly cause you disgust but you feel the unpleasantness. Here are some examples:
-calling women "chicks" almost ALL THE TIME
-calling a child "little guy" over and over and over
-depicting Turkish peoples' use of English as if the people themselves were very bad renditions of google translate (which is not the case, especially in Bodrum)
There were many instances of very biased and condescending viewpoints of Middle Eastern people. I don't know if this is the authors own thoughts that he tries to convey to us, or if he is trying to make the "hero that saved the world" have that type of personality.
I am glad I read the book but it left a bad taste in my mouth. If that makes any sense at all.
