A quick and fun read.

Nothing too serious in this book. Just a funny look at life away from the big city. A “typical” family moving out of the big city and discovering a little bit more about themselves.

Good story about a mixed race (I hate that term as I feel like it's one race - human) family (he's black, she's white) with two kids (he's gay, she's straight) who move from San Francisco to the burbs. At times funny, at times poignant, at times very real - it was well worth the read.

I probably wouldn't have picked this book up if it hadn't have been free on Kindle, here are a few thoughts:

Boring, unlikeable characters (the exception being Logan).
The way the characters need to label everyone all the time - it felt like there was an awful lot of pigeonholing characters for a book supposedly about acceptance.
The dynamic between husband and wife just seemed flat whether they were getting on or arguing.
The bitchery of the suburbs which could have been quite cutting satire but just wasn't.
Meh.

I read this on Kindle which is significant because I'll read something that way that I would never pick up as a printed book. This falls into that category but it wasn't a bad book. The Kindle format is actually a mess (two different fonts and colors, massive spacing between sentences and paragraphs) but that shouldn't affect the read too much.

The story is good - it moves forward at a good pace and has a couple turns that keep it interesting but the writing is just okay. Some of the descriptions feel pretty repetitive and the dialogue is a bit inauthentic.

The ending is a little trite but it does fit with the story.

Overall a quick, light read.

Quite lovely

I have had this book lined up in my queue for months and am just now getting to it. What a shame! It was such a lovely surprise! It’s a story about finding your place in the world, whether you are a full grown adult or a 13 year old boy. It can be a struggle for even those people who think they are the most “well adjusted.”
