Incredibly informative and quite upsetting upon reflection that there is a shared societal misogynistic attitude regarding women and motherhood no matter the country.

Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 follows a Korean woman named Jiyoung throughout her childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. It was incredibly relatable and depressing- the experience of Kim Jiyoung reflected my own, and other women's, in so many ways. This book explores the long-lasting effects of misogyny on the mental health of women, as well as the more specific experience of Korea's expectations for women.

Since it was translated, the language was often rather simplistic, which I actually enjoyed because it was effective at conveying the message while also not being too complex and metaphorical. The way the book starts in the present day and then goes back to the beginning of Jiyoung's life made it much more compelling and intriguing.
