⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Puppet Show – M.W. Craven
This book was bloody fantastic. I inhaled it in two days and immediately reserved the next one at the library because there was no way I was leaving Washington Poe hanging.
The characters are next-level good. They are complicated, flawed, and completely addictive. Poe is grumpy in the best possible way, Tilly is awkwardly brilliant and hilarious, and together they are crime-fighting gold. Their banter had me laughing out loud, which felt slightly wrong given the body count, but I regret nothing.
The mystery was clever, dark, and properly twisty. Just when I thought I had it figured out, Craven yanked the rug out from under me and I loved every second. It is gritty, gruesome, and somehow still manages to have heart.
An epic start to what I can already tell will be my next crime series obsession. If you like your thrillers smart, dark, and with characters you actually want to spend time with, get this one immediately. Washington Poe, call me.

I bought this from my favourite book store @fosterslittlebookshop, as I began this book I had my doubts that I’d gone a little too dark in my murder mystery era, but as the story developed I fell in love with Poe and his attitude to solving crimes

A good mystery and compelling characters.

Washington Poe has been suspended from the NCA and is living in a croft, with his dog Edgar, in the middle of nowhere on the Cumbrian Fells when he gets a call to return to duty when the third victim of a killer dubbed the ‘Immolation Man’ is found to have Poe’s name carved into his charred remains.

I read the blurb before purchasing and it seemed like the perfect book for me - I do love a dark disturbing serial killer thriller! And I was right because this really is one of those books you just can’t put down. I was hooked right from the start and I read into the wee small hours to finish. It is the perfect police procedural. The plot moves fast and there are all the usual twists and turns. I did guess who the killer before the actual reveal but this didn’t spoil the book at all.

The characters were all brilliant but one of the highlights for me was the character of Tilly Bradshaw, the best analyst the NCA has with 2 degrees from Oxford, who just happens to suffer from Aspergers. She is socially awkward having been sheltered from the world, but through her relationship with Poe she becomes stronger which was great to read, and some of their exchanges made me laugh out loud.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It is definitely in my top 5 of books I have read this year. I can’t wait for the next one and a little bird (M.W. Craven himself!) tells me that the new book is due out in less than 6 months and that he is already writing Poe #4. I can’t wait!!!
