Amazing debut novel by M.V. Craven. So glad I only just discovered him as an author as I just bought all the other books in the series so got 4 more books (Botanist coming out in June 2022) to go! Woop woop! Would definitely recommend to all crime book readers!

Really enjoyed this one, evident from the fact that I read it all today. A proper crime thriller with a really great detective. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for book 2!

Sinto-me sempre muito inteligente quando consigo perceber quem é o culpado, embora seja da opinião que qualquer policial/thriller que se preze deve apresentar todas as informações necessárias para resolver o caso. Este livro passou o teste sem, no entanto, se tornar maçador.

De uma maneira muito sucinta, a estrela subtraída prende-se com uma revelação que veio assim do nada no fim do livro - e que acho que foi mal trabalhada, bem como com algumas linhas ao longo da história que me soaram esquisitas (estamos a falar de qualquer coisa como 3 frases numa obra de mais de 300 páginas, nada preocupante).

Well, this was a disturbingly dark story...I enjoyed it quite a lot actually but for a few things that bugged me. 🤔
The shock value of the story got a bit tiring at one point. Not only was every single revelation or confrontation trying to outdo the previous ones with ickyness but there was just so many of them. And one of the "revelations" about Poe's past was a bit ridiculously overdramatic and yet revealed in the most bizarrely by-the-way sidetrack ever...😆
I loved Tilly and Poe together, their grumpy darkness/sunshiny lightness friendship dynamic was fun. Tilly feels like a mixture of Penelope (Criminal Minds), Abby (NCIS) and Sheldon (TBBT) and she sounds to be on the spectrum, not "sheltered" as the author put it. If you live in a cave somewhere or are Amish or something then maybe yes, you can be so naive as an adult. Weirdly enough Tilly starts to get miraculously better at social cues which isn't exactly logical but okay ...🫣
The story was dark and sad and I had the culprit on radar from the first moment they entered the story. It made the most sense and was quite obvious. I still enjoyed the path for the detectives to get there and it was a nice quick read. I found the decision to actually reveal the killer quite a lot of pages before the ending to be interesting and it did give some air of mystery back to me as I didn't know what to expect next. 🤔
