A very solid, dark and engaging first entry in the Washington Poe series which finds itself somewhere between the territories of Jo Nesbø, Val McDermid (in her darker works) and Michael Connelly. Craven no doubt takes creative liberties, but he succeeds well at crafting the illusion of procedural realism. The mystery plot is properly twisted, gruesome and well executed and it finds a satisfying dramatic conclusion that also manages to open a whole can of worms for some of the characters. Poe with his punk attitude and Bradshaw as a socially awkward and sheltered genius nerd are two very bright but very different misfits who make an interesting pair that’s easy for the reader (not quite as much for their colleagues) to warm up to and care for, surrounded by also well drawn secondary players. It’s a series with a lot of potential to become a must-read.

As soon as I finished, I wondered how I had not read any of Mr Craven’s work before, and I knew that I had to go back to the beginning, to learn more about Detective Washington Poe. In this, the opening novel in the series, a serial killer is operating in England’s Lake District. The killer is torturing his victims before burning them alive in prehistoric stone circles. The police seem to have no clues until the third victim is discovered with the name of disgraced and currently suspended police officer Washington Poe carved into his chest. Is Poe intended to be the next victim?
Poe is returned to duty, somewhat reluctantly and a little awkwardly. His former partner, Stephanie Flynn, is now his supervisor. He is teamed up with Matilda (Tilly) Bradshaw, a socially awkward but brilliant civilian analyst. Poe earns Bradshaw’s loyalty almost immediately after intervening when she is bullied. Tilly’s social skills may be underdeveloped, but she is a genius when applying her skills to data and pattern recognition. Poe is relentless in his search for truth, which causes some difficulties for those who try to manage him. Poe and Bradshaw have a challenge in front of them: trying to find out what connects the growing number of murder victims while trying to prevent further murders and negotiating various pitfalls in a political minefield of policing.
The story they uncover is not for the faint-hearted, and there are several twists before the serial killer is identified. And yes, I did see some shades of grey where I might usually see black and white.
I already have the second book in the series lined up, and I note that a seventh book is due later this year. Yes, I am definitely a fan.

What a wonderful debut. I really enjoyed Washington Poe the DI suspended for doing what he felt was right but it was Tilly Bradshaw that stole the book. I'll let you discover her yourself and highly recommend you do so!
