A little overlong and at times I was bored. The book within a book didn’t work as well for me in this one as the previous one. The mystery itself felt like something i had already read before being retold.
Clever but there were too many characters and too much exposition
It’s taken me quite a while to get through this book - I initially found reading the book within the book hard to get into as the writing style changed.
Now that I ploughed through and got into the style, I am amazed by how clever Horowitz‘ writing actually is. To write a crime novel inside another crime novel mustn’t be an easy job to do, and once all of the reveals occur everything falls into place.
The book feels quite final for the main character but I do hope she returns for a third book!

A thoroughly enjoyable second outing of the Susan Ryeland series. Definitely classed as "a romp" in my mental taxonomy of books. I admit that the book within a book thing didn't work quite as well for me this time as it did in Magpie Murders, but enjoyable all the same, and I'm sure that I'll read the third one. I love the recurring characters, and though I clocked the murderer at about the 30% mark, it was still a ride to the end, and I found myself continually second-guessing myself throughout. Light, fun, and a nice change from some of the heavier reading I've been doing recently.

Murder mystery that's a book within a book. Easy read.
First sentence: The Polydorus is a charming family-run hotel, located a short walk away from the lively town of Agios Nikolaos, one hour from Heraklion.
Ends of chapters: Solid
