I was encouraged to read this during Bookclub when I mentioned enjoying the series on PBS.
As is generally the case for me, the book delves deeper, unpacks the story in great depth and allows the reader to imagine for themselves Susan (former literary editor for Allan Conway) in her MG convertible, Aiden, Cessily, Chief Inspector Lock, and more (there are ALOT of characters).
I enjoyed the story within the story which in the book was Allan Conways book “Atticus Pünt takes the case” written as separate chapters rather told alongside the case that Susan is asked to trace.
If you love PBS check out these books by Anthony Horowitz !

Another book within a book which delivered the same charm and twists as the first book about Susan Ryeland. Great fun! Almost fair play, so the reader could almost solve the mystery alongside the protagonist. Enjoyed the emotional development of Susan as well. A very long book (18 hours on audio!!) but well paced because Of the second plot embedded within the main plot. I didn’t find the book dragged its feet at all, which is something I can find when reading long books otherwise. I’ve heard there will be a third book in this series and I will definitely be picking it up! Content warnings below

love a good mystery even thou this one had me all over the place i still rate it. also book-ception with the book inside the book was peam
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read and review.
This book is basically a two for one! I am amazed when an author writes a book to be included in the novel. This is the second book in the Susan Ryeland series and the second novel in which we enjoy an Atticus Pund mystery. Personally I think Anthony Horowitz is a genius to be able to write mystery novels that are based on completely fictitious novels that he also wrote!
Horowitz writes real and relatable characters and has so many subplot that keep developing through each new novel in what I hope will be a lengthly series. Seeing the recurring characters and their development makes me really understand Susan's motivation. The mysteries are also fun to read and since the one taking place in Susan's timeline involves clues or hints from Atticus Pund it is pretty fun to try to solve both crimes.
I hope there will be more Susan Ryeland books - I'm already looking forward to them!

I was really excited to read the next book in the series but like a lot of series, this book relies too much on things which were done before. Also I didn’t particularly like this book inside a book because most of the characters in it were supposedly based on the hotel staff but the story was unrecognizable from the actual story that the whole inside story was a complete waste of time and 300 pages. I started to get frustrated about halfway into the inside book at the sheer absurdity. And then come to find out at the end that the answer was in the name of the opera and in the first pages of the internal book was a huge let down. I didn’t like this book at all. I don’t expect 100% originality but please stop writing the same book again and repackaging it as if it’s something different. Ugh so annoying also that the 300 pages leant nothing to the plot. While I am ranting, one other thing is apparent to me is that this author is extremely judgmental of people. It comes out in all his main characters and the judgy comments he makes about people’s appearances. I am done with this author.
