I enjoy Horowitz's books --sort of in the 'cozy' mystery category -- this one feels like you can't put it down for too long because there is a massive cast of characters, and a story within a book within another book, and multiple murder mysteries to keep track of. It is all very clever & interesting, but I did feel like he went one step too far (when main character Susan has solved the mystery, gone back home, and yet continues to pore over the book, finding more clues and hints - all the lions, more anagrams) - ok, we get it, you're ultra clever!

Love a good book within a book and it was a fun mystery - I thought the writing left something to be desired though. Sometimes it felt like the author was dumbing things down a bit - as if he wasn't sure the reader was following.

Wow, just wow. Horrowitz continues to top himself. This may be my favourite of his mysteries I've read thus far. Once again we are given two novels for the price of one, both mysteries equally compelling. I don't know where to begin with this one, all I can say is it was compelling and gripping from the start. By the final 3rd of the book, I was frantically flipping back and forth through the pages (and my notes....yes I was that invested) piecing together this ingenious puzzle.
Once the reveal happens it just seems so obvious. Prior to finishing the last chapter I found myself thinking how I wish Horrowitz would use some of the same clues his author Conway used in his last novel - Magpie Murders. Low and behold in the final pages he reveals a huge obvious clue that was a slap in the face in the best possible way.
I love mysteries and puzzles and this was both which the reader can actually solve if the right clues are followed. Great read and great fun
