I couldn’t get into this the way I did with Strange Pictures, which I enjoyed a lot more!

Although that ending had me like…what?

It’s very classic Japanese horror. The novel gradually unravels a mystery of a house with a strange hidden room.

The novel is really fast paced and easy to read. According to the translator’s notes, the writing style is  meant to be accessible. It has pictures of the house layout and focuses more on the dialogue than description.

I enjoyed the story but found the ending abrupt.

I much prefer Uketsu’s other book, titled “Strange Pictures”, over Strange Houses. Strange Houses mainly explore the architecture layout of a house inhabited by a family of three (parents and a child). The house layout seemingly looks normal enough, until you examine closer and notice that there’s something odd about the layout of the house.
The strangeness of the house layout makes the protagonist and his/her friend theorize that there may be a dark conspiracy at hand involving the inhabitants of the house, one that features murdering its guests.

Super captivating, I loved how it was purely dialogue, being told a story through a reading a story.
You constantly are left wondering would could possibly be unveiled next, who has dark secrets and who you can trust.
The use of the floor plan's  throughout the book felt like you could invision yourself in the house and fall into the "day dream" of Kurihara's theories.

A thrilling story about family legacy, betrayal, with a truly sad undertone.

Felt a bit flat compared to Strange Pictures. The characters didn’t feel as fleshed out and too much explaining/leaps to conclusions.
