This book is for all the people pleasers. The good girls contorting themselves into knots. The ideal kids who do whatever it takes to not rock the boat. The ones who should be happy but look in the mirror and can't figure out who the real them is. Sonali Dev punched me in the chest repeatedly and I am so grateful. This was such a beautiful and Complicated story. It's dual timeline, and I was equally invested in both. Mira is so relatable it hurts and the way she is so attuned to other people's pain and discomfort felt amost mystical. I was honestly ready for this to end one way, and not even mad about it, and that right there is why I needed this book! I'm being vague to avoid spoiling anything, but I'm literally holding back tears this was so good. I'm already trying to figure out how to get my bookclub to read this or another of her books, cause I can feel in my bones they'll be good.

Why would I want to waste my time on a book where the author chose to make everyone sound like assholes? She handed over information to make them understandable, but didn't put any effort into actually writing them into sympathetic characters.
Bullied brother whose parents abused and abandoned him for being gay after he was assaulted? Author just writes him as a ragey jerk.
Mira's parents are written like a caricature of the stereotype of immigrant parents.
Mira is a jerk for not standing up for her brother, and I don't care to see her redeemed.
Krish is entitled, arrogant, and sucky, and I don't care about whatever his hidden pain is, either.

Beautiful story
I loved this book! It was so insightful and interesting and just beautiful. The protagonist feels like a real person and her journey out of codependency is so relatable.

I think the author wanted so badly for this to be important and meaningful, that she threw a bit of every thing to make it weighty. Adoption, rape, abortion, homophobia, coercive parenting, parental abandonment, this has it all. But it barely scratches the surface of any of those topics. I think narrowing the focus would have helped the story.
I didn’t like the romance element of this. I think the author didn’t want it to feel like Mira was cheating on her fiancé emotionally with Krish, so there was no chemistry between them and then they suddenly end up together at the end. This made it feel like it came out of left field. I also felt bad for Druv. She didn’t give him a chance to adjust to her changes and get to known the real her.

I loved this story. The characters are complex and learning who they are and can become by unlearning what they were raised to be all while searching for the owner of a mysterious ring. The book is somewhat predictable but so lovely.
