What a lovely story, such depth to the characters in a simply told story.

I love a book with no plot, but this one just didn’t completely do it for me. There’s nothing in particular that I hated; it just didn’t stick out to me. That’s really all I have to say about it!

I liked reading a book from the perspective of elderly characters, as that isn’t something I typically find myself doing and I found that it was done well in this book! I think the quote, “
Who would have thought at this time in our lives that we'd still have something like this. That it turns out we're not finished with changes and excitements. And not all dried up in body and spirit,
” sums up the best parts of this book for me. I liked that it explored what it means to be people and to live and how different people choose to live different lives. Again, though, it just didn’t really stand out. This is a very quick read though!

Lean, beautiful, sad story about two lonely souls. Addie and Louis are neighbors. They've each lived alone for years since losing their respective spouses. One day Addie proposes an unusual arrangement, and Louis agrees. A deepening friendship develops between them, as they talk about their lives - their joys, sorrows, hopes and regrets. Addie's son, a man made bitter by loss and rejection, objects to their new friendship. Addie and Louis must make a difficult decision.

This book is short but so lovely, and so sad. I've never read anything by Kent Haruf, and this is his last work, published in 2015. I am enamored of his taut but graceful prose, and plan to put his other books on my TBR list.
