Listen: I didn't think I'd like this book. Two old people finding solace at night. But it's simple and short. What's most surprising? Haruf explores progressive issues: casual sex, small-town gossip, divorce, loss, friendship and love. Okay, so maybe those aren't exactly particular to today. But to Louis and Addy, older widows who found each other and met out of necessity rather than love, this union is something different.
I found this book heartwarming and subtly controversial. It's a love story between a couple too old to consider marriage. Together they see and endure crisis and tragedy. Together, they are stronger and more at peace. "Our Souls at Night" is bound to be an underrated book that gets lost on the shelf somewhere because of it's classic content, lack of profanity, suspense or thrills. But man, it was good.

Beautiful. I read this in one sitting and enjoyed every line of this novel about love and the human condition. After spending months taking care of the elderly, it struck a little close to home about how much despair and loneliness can rule their lives. The younger generation can sometimes be so small minded and although the couple experienced a fair amount of sadness, this was still uplifting for me. I also admired how much a person's life can change when they put forth the necessary positive attitude and effort. There is so much more life to look forward to, no matter how old you are.

I'd actually probably give this 3.5 stars. It was a charming book. I loved the simplicity of the language and how the story unfolded. It was a quick read and had a lot of depth for such a short book.

Beautifully written, poignant and moving. It was almost cathartic to read as I lost my mother this year and my father has been seeing someone which is a painful process for everyone. But the adage, "life is for the living" has stayed around for all this time because it is real and true.
