A book with very low lows but pretty high highs!

The beginning dragged out for SOOOO long I almost dropped it at 12% and then at 20%, but I held out and this book is actually worth the read. I think the story truly starts around 40%. I really did not expect this story to go into the directions that it did.

I originally rated Rebecca 3.75⭐️ but it’s been seven days and two books and I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind, so I’m raising it to 4.00⭐️

“Perhaps I haunted her as she haunted me…”

I really do not gravitate toward thrillers or classics at all. However, I was immediately sold from the elaborate detail within the opening chapter describing the Manderley residence (how the hairs on my neck perked up at reading about the tree branches moving like skeleton fingers). This book just straight OOZED a dark and gothic atmosphere.

Though our 19 year old FMC can be insufferable at times, I think many women can remember what it was like to be that age or in a time of comparing ourselves to others, feeling self conscious or being made to feel meek or smaller by our loved ones, especially a male partner. It’s evident Du Marier intended to warn woman on the loss of identity when feeling this way. Most all of the characters in Rebecca were quite disturbed (Mrs. Danvers I’m talking about you 😳) yet it didn’t take away from the very sharp and ominous feel that will leave me thinking about this book for ages!! I can see why this classic has stood the test of time.

I love how this is simply about unlikeable people obsessing over other unliveable people

‟Whoever lived within its walls — the peace of Manderley could not be broken or the loveliness destroyed. [...] it would lie always in a hollow like an enchanted thing, guarded by the woods —”

this moment reminded me so much of Hill House, there's truly something about houses that have so much character and humanity that they are a character of their own.

I loved this book a lot and I think it's first and foremost thanks to the beautiful poetic writing of Daphne du Maurier, which I fell in love with instantly. The characters themselves weren't very likable, yet I was still absorbed by this book unfolding and looking forward to reading the next chapter every time. I was a little deceived by the ending as I felt it left some things a bit vague. But overall, this was such a wonderful, gothic tale.

I really enjoyed this! It’s the first classic I’ve partaken in in awhile, and it surely did not read like one. du Marier’s prose is absolutely gorgeous, and the mystery in this novel is thrilling and really kept me turning the pages. I found the main character deeply irritating and fundamentally dislikeble despite her naivety. However with that said, these qualifies also humanize her. I had to remember that this person is supposed to be younger than my age now (so <25 lol), and completely out of her element at Manderley. The pacing was a bit off for me as I found the first half or so pretty slow, but the latter half moved super quickly. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking to read classics that don’t feel like high school reading assignments.

slow-paced

Man marries teenage girl young enough to be his daughter, specifically because she is a "child" and inexperienced, then bullies and mocks her relentlessly, showing her no affection or kindness until it suits him. She is as infatuated and delulu as can be expected of a girl her age being taken advantage of. There are several allusions to blackface, racist language, and gross mistreatment of a character with special needs. Oh, and incest.
