Not quite sure if I liked this book or not. Either way, it was a quick read. But it was quite a strange story, compared to Kristin Hannah’s other compelling, well-researched novels. Much suspension of disbelief required.

As a fan of Kristin Hannah, when I saw she had written a Christmas fable I knew I had to pick it up. Joy Candellaro has had a rough year, being recently divorced after her husband cheated on her with her own sister. Once they announce their pregnancy, she decides she needs to escape reality and she purchases a plane ticket to the town of Hope, BC. After yet another tragedy, she finds herself in the Olympic rainforest and decides to leave her life behind. She meets a man and his little boy Bobby who is experiencing his first Christmas after losing his mother, and he uses an invisible friend to communicate to her. Bobby and Joy develop a unique and strong connection and early on I had a hunch of how the story would unfold - somewhat predictable yet not at the same time? A story of loss, grief, strained relationships and hope, this novella was unexpected, but well written and I finished it in one sitting.

I loved this story. It is a wonderful example of “when one door closes and another opens.” This was about forgiveness and family and how to heal.
