It gets .25 of a star for a cute ending. But getting to that ending was painful. By the second chapter this book cemented my thought that kristin hannah just throws absurd scenario after absurd scenario in order to emotionally manipulate the reader to feel any emotion intensely. I should have DNF'd as the emotion i felt the most was annoyance at this is unhinged and absurd storyline. I love Hallmark christmas movies and am fine with some of the nonsensical things that occur in them but this was so far beyond that. Also it just gave me the ick of "they're family, so it doesn't matter if they hurt you, betrayed your trust, abandoned you....because it's the season of forgiveness and family" 🤢 the only good thing about this book is it gives me a book to use for a craft and I won't feel guilty about tearing it apart.

While this was a very touching story in places, I had a hard time finishing it. Some parts were so unbelievable and outlandish I had a hard time not rolling my eyes and laughing out loud. I am a true KH fan, but I had a very hard time with this book. šŸ˜ž

Hannah's older works, like this one, lack the strong plot that her newer works have.
This story was pretty underdeveloped and weak, and frankly, nonsensical.

ā€œThis is my resolution for the New Year. I will be honest with myself. I’ll keep my eyes open. I’ll see what’s there, not just what I want to see.ā€

I marked that quite early on in my reading of this book, but now that I’ve finished that means something entirely different than it has at first. Of course, saying any more would spill too much, but I find it fascinating to go back and look at quotes once you have the whole story!

You have to suspend a lot of disbelief with this book. From the beginning there were some plot points that were totally implausible or way too convenient. And then half way through the book took another turn which almost made this magical realism, but not quite. And yet, I really did enjoy reading this. I buddy read it with my mom and we both felt similar. It’s weird and strange and also we wanted to keep reading. I called her the moment I had finished reading so we could discuss because I just had to talk about it.

A twist on a Christmas romance

Well… the day finally came. I found a Kristin Hannah book I don’t like. Sadly, I was bored through most of this book. Joy, our main character, makes a spontaneous decision to buy a plane ticket after an ugly separation from her husband. She’s on Christmas break and has time for an adventure. From there… things happen. Ha! She meets a young boy who is grieving the loss of his mother, but we find out what we think happened may not have happened… or did it? And that’s the best I can do without spoiling it.

I could hear Kristin Hannah in the writing but for some reason my feelings and emotions weren’t awakened. I have also learned I don’t love kid dialogue in books.
