The Beholder had me laughing out loud, left me heartbroken and then left me hanging! It’s safe to say I enjoyed reading it.
I could feel everything that Selah was feeling as if it was my own experiences. I understand that some people will not enjoy this book and there were things I didn’t like too. Mainly the over use of the phrase “his lips were a thin line” which was very annoying to me. However what I disliked most of all was how blind Selah was to what was going on around her and waiting until the last moment to ask the right questions. And I also didn’t understand the pacing of the book one moment we have lengthy paragraphs and chapters about a single event and then glossed over other events/days in less than a page.
However I enjoyed almost everything else about it. I loved how Selah grew into herself and became a strong woman compared to how naïve she was to begin with. I loved the contrast between her suitors and their cultures. And how they contrasted with her own culture.
Overall I loved reading The Beholder and I’m excited to see what happens in the sequel

I did not expect this book to hold me tight in its grasps like it did.
This was not even in my Priority TBR book. I was highly skeptical, for I thought that I would not like the premise of the book. After all, a book focused on romance is not my usual cup of tea. What more a YA romance.
Nonetheless, Anna Bright took me on quite the adventure.
I still need to have my thoughts gathered before I can articulate them. My mind is still scrambled.
I do look forward to see what will happen to the crew.

This book is described as The Oddessy and fairytales – and let me say straight away that that is not true. There is one character named Homer and yes, they’re on a boat travelling across the sea, but that’s about as far as it goes. There is a lot of myth, lore and fairytales used as inspiration for pretty much every character. I was very confused as to the level of technology in this world, as they travel by boat, carriage, etc. but then she has a radio? Yet not a single drop of other technology leading up to the radio? Wut. I felt there wasn’t a lot of intriguing plot, and given that this is banked as a romance perhaps shouldn’t surprise me. As long as you don’t go in expecting the most engaging plot, this could be an entertaining read, as it was for me in the end. I am getting tired of most of FairyLoot’s books being first in series though – I want closure! Especially as up till now I have not been inclined to carry on reading any sequels to the ones I have finished.
I enjoyed this a lot it just wasn't quite good enough to get 5 stars but I really loved it!
This book is set in a world that's very similar to ours, but slightly different. I will say it took me a bit to figure that out. This isn't necessarily a fairy tale retelling per se...it's more a bunch of fairy tales and myths rolled into one, which I found to be very clever. Selah is definitely a bit dramatic and weak at first, but by the end she's really grown up, and I'm looking forward to the second book!
I wasn't sure about The Beholder at first, but I ended up really liking it! It's a pretty cool book, and I'm glad I read it.
Selah has an interesting journey, and the book in general reminded me of a fairy tale combined with an alternate history of the world. I wish I could more specific but the book really felt like it was an alternate world and yet, it was a lot like ours. There's New York, the Potomac, Russia, England, King Arthur, Baba Yaga...I could go on and on about the myths and stories we see in the book.
Everything was done pretty well, and it was fun trying to figure everything out, and how everything was connected to stories I was familiar with. It makes me wonder if there references to stories I'm not familiar with, and what we'll see in the next book. I wonder if we'll meet the other suitors, or if Selah will try to not go meet them. And with what was really going on with everyone on her ship, I'm curious to see what will happen.
I'm not sure about the time period the book is supposed to be set in, because there are some very familiar places, but also some pretty unfamiliar ones as well. I'm having a hard time with that, because it feels so old, but it also feels modern in a way. Either way, it's a pretty interesting read.
I feel like it's definitely set up that she'll have to pick someone to marry, and I'm honestly not sure who I would choose. She could go with anyone, and I'm glad that, for once, it's not obvious who's she going to go with. After what happened in England, I'm not sure if she'll go with him, but it really seems like she's genuinely into both guys. We'll see what happens, of course, and I'm intrigued. The next book feels so far away, but I'll definitely wait and see, because I really want to know what happens.
My Rating: 4 stars. I really liked The Beholder, and liked the combination of places and myths that come to life in this book.
