I was lucky enough to go into this book with no expectations - other than how absolutely freaking gorgeous the cover is. Because I didn't go into this expecting an Odyssey retelling I wasn't disappointed; but excited when little mentions of Homer and Penelope came up. However, this is definitely not a retelling... You might be able to stretch and say inspired by The Odyssey, but even that seems to push it.
Onto the book. Uhhh. It is hard to explain, but this book is good and terrible for me. I think Anna Bright has set up the potential for a great plot and interesting characters, but nothing worthwhile happens in this book. It felt kinda like an origin story that could have been shaved down to 100 pages. There is far too much time spent listening to Saleh whine. Insistently. I worry for any country she is supposed to be in charge of at this point. Also, the damn insta love in this book is worse than I have maybe ever seen. In such a short book she has three guys she likes (two she loves) in just a couple of months. Ick.
All that said, I think the actual crew could prove to be fantastic characters. And I really wish we didn't have to read through Saleh to get to them. I just did not like Saleh until the last two pages of this book, but that gives me hope that she will be better in the next.
I am hopeful for the conclusion to this duology. I think Anna Bright laid down a lot of ground work for the next book to be good. Hopefully.

2.5 stars
I didn't love this... the all, a girl sent away to find suitors was not my thing.
I didn't care for the main character and for me, there was not much plot.
The end intrigued me but I just don't know if it is enough to make me read the second book.

(this girl fell for the first suitor really fast and in days after leaving the first suitor country, she fell for the second. What the hell?!!!!)The end intrigued me but I just don't know if it is enough to make me read the second book.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed in a fairyloot book. So many names, so many characters, such unnecessary plot twists and scenes. The main character was so naive and dumb and I can’t believe how much she ignored. An incredibly frustrating read.
So and so, but very interested in the second book to see more of the character development
