This book was so long and nothing happened. It got more interesting at THE VERY END as everything started to happen in chapter 40. AND BTW we spend 39 chapters of this book with a love interest then he betrayed her and then we spend only 28 chapters with the real love interest

I'm not sure how to rate this book... i enjoyed it (enough to finish it in like 2 days) but still i had several issues with it :/ I feel the world was very confusing, I didn´t understand if it was set in the past or in an alternative reality, I also didn´t enjoy the insta-love
(it happened twice!!)
. The thing is I don't know how i feel...

Update: I'm giving it 3 stars but it's leaning more towards a 2.75 i think...

This book did not make my favorites list, but it is also not on my “do not recommend” list.
Selah wears her heart on her sleeve and gives her attention and affections to any boys that gives her a second glance.
This book is a lot like the bachelorette but on the ocean.
But I will say that if you enjoy that type of romance you will enjoy this book. I have heard a few people compare it to the Selection novels.
I was a little disappointed that the mystery aspect of the plot did not really drive any of the book until the very last chapter.
But I did enjoy seeing Selah enjoy herself with the different suitors. She has spent her whole life serving her country and this gave her a chance to have a little fun.
I plan on reading the next book once it comes out next year.

i stopped on page 264 because at this point, as far as I could tell, the 18 year old MC had just fallen in love with her THIRD person in the span of three months? Maybe four months? I can't really tell the timeline.

I’m giving it three stars. Not because it was undeserving of more- but it was so oddly done.
I loved the way it was written, Anna Bright is clear and concise.
I love a good romance, which this book did not lack but maybe it should have just focused on it? The other parts- the “treason” and the sudden defiance Selah had? They felt like absolute afterthoughts. It kind of hurt, I’d have loved to seen Selah have been more confident, defiant and strong through out or even a semblance of growth. But it came out of absolutely no where in the last thirty pages.
It also clearly left off so that there would be a sequel but it more felt like there was no resolution to anything.

I wanted more romance and less build-up. It seems insane to have 2 weeks per suitor and TWELVE suitors. That’s WAY too long and even despite Selah being a little naive and optimistic about changing course, you just KNOW half of those boys aren’t even gonna get a day. Also what’s with Lang? There’s all this build-up as if HE’S gonna be the endgame but not quite enough obvious displays or infatuation etc. I’m behind him 100% and hope he’s the real love interest but god it’s very very slow burn for a duology.

I just had great hopes for this book. I really wanted to like it or should I say love it? It was not a book that I ended up loving, but I still want to see how the series is going to end. I feel like my favorite character in this entire book was the grumpy Cobie. She was amazing and I want to meet her in real life. She was my favorite in the whole gang. I feel like she is the reason I will be continuing with the next book. I need to find out how everything is going to end. I am really glad that I went with the audiobook route and not the ebook, because I think I would have never picked up the physical book.

CAWPILE Rating:
Characters (7)- I don't know if I like the main character. She is so naive and makes the stupidist mistakes ever, but at least she can reflect on her mistakes. I like that she is trying to do everything to help her father and how could she not realise that her father was being poisoned. It's really easy to see. I don't know if Tordon or whatever his name is going to end up with the main character. I can't even remember the main character's name.
Atmosphere (6.5)- I felt stuffed and not good while reading this book. The situation that the main character was in got to me and it was uncomfortable. I felt like it was relatable at some times and not. I loved being in Asgard. It was like the main character learned to be in her own skin.
Writing (7)- The writing was fine and it did a great job at making me feel uncomfortable with the characters and the choices that they made. At least I understood what was going on most of the time and sometimes the writing was cringy. I hope the way of storytelling will change as the main character matures.
Plot (6.5)- this was the main problem with the ending. I don't get what happened and how the main character became the traitor. What did she do and what are her shipmates doing? I am so confused. Am I going to get explanation in the next book?
Intrigue (7)- I was not really interested in what was going on most of the time. I just thought that she was gonna do something big in the end. I am at least intrigued about the characters enough to read the sequel.
Logic (6.5)- Some of the things that the main characters chose to do didn't make sense. I just don't understand.
Enjoyment (7)- I will be reading the second book. I think this was a book that I would have liked if I was 15 and I was new to the world of young adult and yeah.

Brilliant and addicting, this wholly unique book is crafted from a dizzying amount of familiar fairytale elements woven together with exquisite skill. You’ll laugh and cheer and groan and cry with Selah, and fall in love with no less than three different boys (yes, THREE!). Don’t miss this one!!

The Beholder is... A story about a girl who gets kicked out of her providence (?) by her godmother because her godmother wants her soon to be born child to inherit Potomac, instead of her husband's original kid. The godmother seems to have money, so no idea why she went for the low hanging fruit of Potomac but I will play along. Anyways, so Selah gets pushed off the nest and told to get herself engaged, or basically die trying. And on we go on an adventure!

My main, and perhaps most important question: Where is Potomac?

There’s a nasty stepmother, a journey, and a dumb main character who misses a lot of the important details - making this a frustrating read. It was a little too close to reality while still trying to make this seem like a fantasy novel: I wasn’t buying it.
By the end, I was interested in why Selah doesn’t want to go to Imperiya Yotne - and obviously what’s going to happen when she does, so I guess I will try book 2 reluctantly.
An aside: this split seems gratuitous and aimed only at selling book 2.
