dnf at 70ish% :( this was an amazing book. Very well written and beautiful but it was too much for me. This book started messing with my head and I was not happy to pick it up to read
OH MY GOODNESS.
Best of Ferrante!

Raw and excoriating and intense, Elena Ferrante's The Days of Abandonment (5 stars out of 5) is about a woman’s descent into a kind of madness after she is left by her husband for someone younger. Or, it might be argued, that it is the only natural reaction to such perfidy. I haven’t read other reviews yet, but I imagine this book must be polarizing: either it’s a sensationalized portrait of abject hysteria that feeds into stereotype, or an empathetic portrait of the emotional life of the betrayed. I prefer the latter. (And yes, I use the word "hysteria" with all its patriarchal implications.) Either way it’s both hellish and cleansing, the way a fire burns a forest to the ground. I haven’t read or watched My Brilliant Friend, so I can’t compare the two. (An additional warning, in case the book’s description didn’t faze you already: there’s a dog, and bad things happen.)

There has been too much debate on Elena Ferrante's identity and there is a possibility that it is either Anita Raja or Domenico Starnone, both happened to be married to each other. With Domenico Starnone's latest novel taking the same plot as this novel, the mags & journals have started the comparison again. To my knowledge, both of them have denied being Ferrante.
I had recently finished the Neapolitan novel and could have waited to read The Days of Abandonment but this recent surge of news on Ferrante put it back on my radar and I searched for that epub I had saved in my kobo for this one.
Elena Ferrante never disappoints in writing a troubling family story mired with self-reflection brought on by things as big as a separation to as small as casual sex. Olga's husband has left her and she is bearing with this loss by becoming what she thought she would never be, that poor lady (povera). This is a story of her going through her ups & downs and finally not caring. It's actually a coming-to-terms story. The writing is fluid and the translation clear thus making it a very enjoyable read.
Finished with this, I will now be waiting to get my hands on Ties to see the comparison & differences with this novel.
