It doesn't matter how many times I read this book or watch the musical; this story takes my breath away and brings me close tears each time. It's true that there is a lot of sadness and darkness, but there is also a lot of hope and beautiful truth found in it. Its page count may be intimidating (as are some of the non-story tangents), but it is oh so worth reading.

God help me if I ever decide to reread this wretched tome
I have loved this play for years, and finally decided to read the book. The book is so well written, and really helped me explore more deeply into each of the characters. The only negative thing I could say is Hugo spends much time on French History, and it does tend to take away from the main plot/characters in the book. I am really excited to see the movie next, and see how much if any has been added to the musical from the book. I highly recommend this novel, however be advised it is not an easy read. It is long and has many French words, that are not always easy to pronounce.
