Open House
Open House by Katie Sise is well done, and written in a way that grips your soul.
I have this story 4 stars because I found it oddly predictable. I’m not sure if it’s a me thing- or a book thing though.
At the end of the day, I really enjoyed the book, after struggling through part 1 and I would absolutely recommend to a friend.
The end of the book left my heart in a happy place, which is quite surprising when it didn’t end the way I expected... per se

I read most of this in a single day because I couldn't put it down! Sise has absolutely MASTERED the craft of slipping us just enough information to keep us clued in while withholding enough to keep us dying for more. Very interesting structure, too, with the first person flashbacks scattered throughout.
I tend to reserve my 5-star ratings for those 'life changing' kinds of books (which, this one wasn't, but I don't really think that was the goal to begin with), but this is absolutely a very fun read.

I was torn on the rating between a 3 and 4, but bounced it up to 4stars as it did read very fast. There were many red herrings that had me changing my mind multiple times during the book. In the end my first guess was the correct one, but the author was successful in getting me to waiver a few times, so kudos to her for that. Some of the characters felt pretty flat to me, hence why it almost got 3 stars, but overall a fast, entertaining read that kept my attention for an afternoon.
Sooo….this one is very predictable. There is so much thrown in to try and make literally every character look guilty. But I knew who did what from the second chapter. I’m sure you will too. I got hopeful a few times that there was more to it, but nope. I suggest reading a different thriller.
A decade ago Emma an art student walks into the woods while attending a party and is never seen or heard of again. Her case still haunts the university and her family. When her bracelet is recently discovered in a ravine, what happens next turns everyone’s life upside down.
Emma’s younger sister Haley suddenly feels hope the appearance of her sisters bracelet will have the police re-examine her sisters case and not just say she ran away.
When Hayley is invited by Emma’s best friend Josie to an open house, Hayley is shocked to find Josie has been stabbed and she’s rushed to the hospital. The police begin to investigate everyone who was at the open house, soon it appears they have a connection to the night Emma disappearance. We have multiple POV past and present as we realize that many of the town people had a reason to want Emma gone.

I had slightly higher hopes for this after having unusually good luck with the Amazon Prime First Reads. First, I detest books that have different perspectives where the POVs are all in different tenses. Give us all third or first person or give us nothing. I also hate predictable books! I wish who done its would go back to being somewhat original. I hate to shit on this author but it seems like she’ll get better from here. Rooting for ya.

I liked the idea of this book and really wanted it to succeed. However it felt as though all of the tension was sucked out of the book with the frequent time shifts and predictable characters. I did enjoy the final ending for Emma's case, but found the endings for all of the other characters lacking.
