Started strong but ended up just being "okay."

This book has flaws, and some characters seem more like conveniences for the plot rather than necessary parts of the story. I wish warren's story had been more developed.
BUT
The story had me thinking hard about our true crime obsession and sensational journalism. Also the plot moved quickly, and I finished listening on audio in 2 days, so that says something about how engaged I was.

There wasn’t a moment I was bored while reading.
Somewhat predictable moments but very enjoyable none the less! Can’t wait to check out Apple TV mini series based upon this.

I guessed the ending about halfway through but still enjoyed it enough to finish the book. Kathleen also creates a reporter that is easy to hate and honestly gives me new doubts and concerns about the hype thats currently surrounding true crime and the potential effects it has on the people and families involved.

Thrillers are not usually my cup of tea, but I enjoyed this one, largely because it balanced out the darkness and brokenness of the world and family relationships with a couple of characters who were just really kind and lovely people.

I also appreciated the themes around the sensationalization of true crime, privacy, and just generally people being jerks on the internet.

i don’t think the book was bad, i think it just wasn’t for me. i find lanie’s character severely underdeveloped. the sister’s story was good at the start, but i don’t understand the switch from “i don’t want to hear about her ever again, she’s dead to me” to “she is my sister, she is the only family i have left”. also i can’t shake off that weird passage “you’ll be a good mother”, why were they all of the sudden talking about having children? can we just skip that please.
i think i was waiting for the WOW revelation, in the end the twist wasn’t even that grand. but it was entertaining nevertheless.

3.5 stars to Truth Be Told. I liked the element of the podcast and thought it was done effectively (but not as well as it was done in Sadie). It was an intriguing story but I was able to figure it out within the first 50 pages or so. I think the author did a good job of portraying the sisters and how they are both very similar and different at the same time.

Before watching the Apple TV series based off this book, I wanted to make sure I read it. I loved the format of this book where the main substance was dialogue from a podcast set throughout the book. The podcast dialogue varied from paragraph writing to play-type dialogue. The way it was written made this book a quick read! It was a good thriller in that the actual plot was enjoyable. Is it my favorite thriller plot of all time? No. But for someone who may be new to thrillers or just enjoys the basic whodunit scenario, then you’ll enjoy this book.
