I swear that Chelsea Abdullah is determined to shave years off my life. I don't know what I've done to her but... Yes, it's another cliffhanger. Seriously, though, I forgive her because once again this is a mix of fantasy and political intrigue and old grudges and high minded ideals and - most of all - people/jinn just trying to do the Best They Can given the circumstances and their information. It's rough out there under the SandSea, y'all.
Told in various POV, we get to follow the motley crew from before on further adventures but this time in the sunken world of the jinn. Mazen continues to be the sweetest boo and his chapters read like the story-teller he is. It is nice to see him getting a little more comfy in his skin as things go on. If only he can keep hold of his confidence! Loulie spends the book Going Through It because, as awesome as Mazen is, she has spent so much of her life with her second father Qadir that she is understandably thrown and uneasy and off her game throughout their tribulations. Aisha remains top of the list for Crunchy Outside, Needs Therapy Inside, but I love her in spite of herself. I will say this, though - the cast grows exponentially and so you must pay close attention to the names in order to follow what is going on. That is probably my only irk with this one. The last one felt smoother and more streamlined despite plenty of excitement and betrayal. This one has a lot of threads that it tries to keep together and apart and then weave back together. There are times when I had to pause and breathe so that I wasn't as lost as the characters (which is more a me problem than the author, I think). We still have rousing fights but the really deadly action takes place in words, this time.
One more book. How will this wind up???
