Midcentury modern chic lit indeed! While it hasn't aged COMPLETELY in tact, it was 1) a very interesting snapshot of language/culture of the time period, and 2) a lighthearted novel masking deep undercurrents of sadness and suffering--interesting choice to not have an internal dialogue for Linda, but rather to just admire the shopfront, as if taking for granted that yes we all have troubles but here's the fun stuff, the CHAT. And to ponder the question: is it better to hold out for true/passionate/intense but brief love, or to be loved in a muted but lasting way? Are they even both forms of love, or something else (lust and security, respectively)? Etc. Anyway also some really funny caricatures that if they were done today would be horrifying but couched in Mitford's genial tone are silly.

I really enjoyed the characters, uncle matthew was pretty funny. Not much of a story, but you cannot help but like the characters so you want to continue reading.

right up my street ! so funny i was laughing out loud 😘

So good. I laughed out loud, openly shouted 'No!', and was generally really on board with the story from start to finish. It has it's slow points (particularly when it comes to having to translate 40 pages of French, gah!) but your love for the dysfunctional gentry pulls you through. Nancy Mitford had such a typically dry, English view on things that really works in both humorous settings and heartbreak. Fully deserves its place as a classic.

The story of an upper class family in the inter-war years, focusing on the love life of the narrator's cousin Linda. She isn't a very likeable character, but then nobody in the book really is except possibly the Spanish fellow who turns up at the very tail-end of the book and only because we don't really get to know much about him.
