God, I really, really disliked Danny and had no patience to his angst :/

The lack of backstory was also a serious issue here as we don't get to see the connection between Soren and Danny growing and that conspired against enjoying their relationship; the insta-lust and unprofessional conduct at that first interview would have been more bearable ~sigh~

This book is obviously heavily set over a different series, referring to past events that weren’t mentioned here. Can it be read as a standalone? I don't think so, even when it is a completely different series; it feels like you are missing half of the story.

And Michael Dean's narration... I don't really liked it.

Great start to a new series.

This is the first book in the West Coast Forensics series which is a spin off from the Veiled Intentions series. It can be read as a standalone as some of the previous characters appear but are not integral to the plot.
The likeable main characters in this romantic suspense are Soren and Dany. Soren is a police officer on the island and Dany is escaping the reach of his family who are heavily involved in criminal activities. The two of them also have a history together and now that circumstances bring them back together, over two years later, their sizzling chemistry reignites. Be prepared for an angry steamy scene, lots of heat and lots more steam.
This is an engaging and enjoyable read that flows along seamlessly with an intriguing mystery that adds some drama and suspense to the plot. I look forward to the next in the series.

so i started book 1 bc i have an arc of book 2, and "i might understand more of the characters." but there are more books before "book 1" which meant i was lost. which was, not a great start at all.

i felt like i wasted my time tbh. this was, boring? it was lacking in everything.

romance? Soren and Dany lacked the chemistry. idk if i'm supposed to feel their "love" in the past, or the current, bc i absolutely feel nothing at all between them. it was so.. weird that they keep saying they are madly in love with each other, but had sex thrice?? in the past and now. and their communications suck so badly, they hardly do talk with each other. they had no moments, excluding sex.

crime? uh.. trouble here trouble there, policing here and there. but. did the cops get anything? nada. it was Dany, a chef, that did the suspecting and police work. and that Lulu incident just cracks me up at how they suspected it was her lol. (funfact it wasn't Soren or Birdy that did this suspect job!) honestly, just give them a traveling job instead of police work.

this kept coming out, "chatty" Dany.... where......

and also, there's so much of descriptions that are.... not needed, at. all. and inner monologues?

all i can hope is that book 2 will be better.

2.5 ““The only thing I know for sure is you are trouble, and I wouldn’t want you any other way” stars

Please, Soren prayed, I need more than a body. I need Dany Petyr; I need him like the air I breathe. I haven’t felt this alive in years, and now that we’ve found each other, please don’t take him away from me.

Honestly I do not know what to say about this book, it was a fine read but nothing that blew me away and it really didn’t live up to what I wanted it to be. This book got me interested because it’s marketed as people on different sides of the law (which it’s not by the way, one of the main character is from a crime family but he lives a totally regular life and hates his family, so it doesn’t count, having a shitting family doesn’t make you automatically be on the wrong side of the law. The book was really fun and easy to read, I enjoyed reading it, I just had some issues with it. Mostly, I just didn’t feel like the main characters loved each other, which is kind of important in a “romance” book

Brief summary:
Dany is 26, he’s a cook and he’s trying to start a new life and run away from his family. Soren is 30 and a cop in the town where Dany ends up living. Dany and Soren met 3 years ago, had sex a couple of times and then Soren got shot by Dany’s cousin and Dany ran away while Soren was in the hospital.

For what I enjoyed, there was too much of the crime plot but it was really enteresting and engaging. I also really enjoyed both characters. Mostly Soren, Soren is such a solid guy and I really liked him. I can’t really pin-point what I enjoyed about this book but I had a really good time reading it and I wanted to keep reading it, so thats a win in my book.

First, this book was talking to me as if I was supposed to know a lot of backstory about the characters… but how would I? It was really confusing sometimes. I know i’m meant to have read other books before this for maximum understanding (books I haven’t read, of course) but at one point, the book kept me guessing for chapters if these guys had sex with other people when they were separated because it never told me if they did or not, it just assumed that I knew if they did or not, and somehow, i’m sure that wasn’t mentioned in the books in the other series.

Second, there was some hate sex in this which was really hot and I enjoyed it very much.

Third, I really liked how much pining Soren did over Dany, I love a good pining, so much.

Fourth, the investigation to romance ratio wasn’t to my liking. There wasn’t enough romance for me. It was 65% crime and 35% romance, these guys barely interacted, it just didn’t work gor me. The plot was good but lacked lots of romance, I think these guys were in the same room like 6 times in the entire book.

Fifth, one of the biggest thing I don’t like with second chance is when you can’t feel their connection from before and how they fit together and I felt that way here. These people had sex three time and the book tried to convince me that they were in love, and never forgot the other in 3 years. Which just didn’t work for me. I didn’t see how they were meant to be, at all.

Sixth, I liked how Soren was fearful that dany would leave him again, what I didn’t like was how I didn’t feel like Dany never groweled enough to make me forget that he left Soren alone in an hospital bed after the guy got shot. I needed him to say sorry and make me believe that he wouldn’t do it again, but he never did.

Seventh, the guys were always fucking instead of communicating and some of the sex scenes weren’t even that good, it’s such a shame.

Eight, look, I enjoy insta love most of the time but the characters need to actually interact with each other for it to work. These people had sex three times almost three years ago and apparently were in love with each other then. Now 3 years later, they had sex 3 times and had like 5 conversations and they’re in love, still. How? What are you in love with? The other’s dick? Can’t be their personality, you guys barely talked the entire book.

This was a really fun book, I just didn’t feel any spark between the two main characters, and I badly wanted more romance.

I received a copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

If you've read Elle Keaton's Accidental Roots series, you'll have been secretly pining for Soren Jorgensen (you have to say his whole name) and Danylo to get their HEA.

This book delivers the goods, with plenty of action and mystery to keep you entertained.

I love Soren Jorgensen's certainty once he makes his decision, that's very in line with how his character has behaved in previous books where he was a supporting character.

Dany's desire to make up for the bad his family have done is admirable, and I love how the author has played this scenario out.

Can't wait for the next book!

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and I have chosen to leave an honest review.

Good start to a new series.
I loved Soren in Accidental roots series and was looking forward to his and Dany's story. I probably should have done a quick reread of Accidental Roots #8 but would have liked to remember more.

I loved Dany from the start of this one, and really connected with him wanting to start a new life away from the mess that is his family unit. He'd done the work and schooling to start his new life as a chef and it was great seeing him get a chance.

Soren annoyed me at the beginning. His mood swings in relation to Dany were annoying. One second he was accusing him of still being like his family next he was saying that he knew Dany and he wasn't like that. I understood  he was hurt by Dany's previous actions but I wanted better from him. Once he got his head out of his butt he settled down and things progressed.

I liked that his behavior was called out by his fellow officer. She also conducted an interview so everything was above board.

The mystery side of the story was ok, but not one that was memorable to me.

I am interested in the side characters and if the series will continue at this location or head back to head offices. I will read the next one and look forward to seeing where the series lead.

I really enjoyed this spin off series set in the Veiled Intentions world. While Hammarsson and Dempsey are away on their honeymoon so we only get references to them instead of seeing them, it is the same Piedras Island community and some familiar faces from the earlier books are here. While not required for understanding this book’s MCs or story, there is a prequel short story available (Get Real) that introduces us to some characters who do play major roles in this book. It helps a bit with knowing the players here.

The MCs here are both newly arrived to the island but have a history with each other from a couple years ago in Skagit. Soren is a deputy in the sheriff’s office and Dany is a chef working at the diner and newly hired by Cody to work at the resort Brooch. Dany is in hiding from his criminal family and working under a fake name but all that goes belly up when he runs into Soren after a fire at Brooch. They are drawn back to each other and after another fire and a murder things get complicated.

The story arc moves well and the entire last 15% or so of the book had me tense and holding my breath. The suspense is well written and you can feel yourself feeling the anxiety of the MCs. The book is a dual POV so you get equally immersed in each character’s inner thoughts. The character development is good though I’d have liked more on the history between the characters and particularly the incident that is referenced several times that led to Dany taking off. I can’t remember if it is referenced in one of the earlier books but if so a refresher here would have been helpful. If not, then it really needs more explanation here.

A secondary character who appears here and was a big part of the first books appears to be one of the MCs of book two and I am excited about that. I’ve been anxious for his story since he first appeared in the Veiled Intentions books. I strongly recommend this books but I’d advise reading the previous books first if, like me, you like to know all the background info going into a book. It’s not necessary for enjoying this story but will definitely enhance your understanding of the setting here.

**I voluntarily read an arc and this is my unbiased opinion.**
