I had high hopes for this book because its premise was refreshing and not my normal go to plot setup. Sadly, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. I found myself struggling to connect with the characters, which was disappointing. Maybe it was their intense focus on D&D, or perhaps it had more to do with their personalities—it’s hard to say.
The romance aspect fell short for me as well. I thrive on that electric chemistry between a couple, but the dynamic between the female and male leads just didn’t spark for me. Plus, it was puzzling how they navigated their relationship in the midst of a packed D&D game. It felt a bit disconnected, as if the room full of players was more of a barrier than a backdrop.
This is perfect for fans of D&D! However, if you're like me and wanted to venture into a story takes place in that world this wasn't a great match. Here, the story was overshadowed by the assumption that all readers would have an understanding of the game and that isn't the case.

Really enjoyed the D&D aspects and the exploration of oneself through brand new experiences. Makes me want to give D&D a spin!
This was kinda weird and I wasn’t the audience for it

👻 standalone contemporary romance with a DnD twist

Firstly, huge thank you to @hachette for this finished copy!
~My Thoughts~
Sometimes, all you need is a cosy slow burn low stakes no angst read full of wholesome characters, journeys of self discovery and lighthearted humour. And this book does this so well.
FMC Sadie is someone we can all relate to. She was a wonderfully real FMC and I truly felt connected to her. Her escapism that was the tabletop campaign where she played as Jaylie is so reminiscent of the life of a reader or gamer and I feel like this was captured so well.
The pacing is slow but it is needed and feels so genuine. There's no rush with the romance or character growth and I think that's why I connected to this book so much.
The romance with Noah again felt natural and I loved how Noah was portrayed as someone who didn't push Sadie to be anyone but who she wanted to be and wanted her to make her own choices. A true green flag.
The blend of the contemporary mixed with the fantasy campaign itself was so clever. We got to see these characters playing fantasty characters and the story within a story was so refreshing and such a great storytelling technique.
I don't think you have to understand DnD in order to enjoy this (Sadie is a novice) but I think those that know or enjoy DnD and love contemporary romance too will have a fun time with this one

‼️I would like to thank Lenora Woods, Random House Publishing Group, and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this e-ARC‼️
Roll for Romance is a fluffy, slow burn romance comedy. If you need to take a break from dark romances or from your murder mysteries, this is the book to help you through that break.
Sadie is taking a break from the hustle and bustle of NYC in the small town of Heller, TX, where her best friend, Liam lives. Going through a low point in her life, she has to figure out what is the next step for her. Enter Noah: tall, muscular, and ginger with all the golden retriever loyalty a person can give. They instantly have chemistry, but Sadie has to decide whether she is staying in Heller or going back to NYC.
Sadie and Noah have an adorable relationship, but it is so sloooooooooowwwwwww. They clearly like each other, but because of Sadie's confidence issues throughout the book, she doesn't quite know if it is her imagination or not.
Liam is the best friend that every person deserves. Someone who will open their door for you and let you just catch your breath. Honestly, Liam goals for life.
I enjoyed all the nerdy aspects of the novel as well. I, myself, play roleplaying games similar to D&D, so I really can relate to the character's identity and separation. It really is fun! But I found the fanfic writing between Noah/Loran and Sadie/Jaylie cringey. That was something that wasn't needed to advance the romance or plot.
Overall, Roll for Romance was a good read. I wish it was a faster pace. I enjoyed Sadie and Noah's relationship, nonetheless.
