This is an impressive book that addresses how genetics, environment, diet, supplements, etc. affect canine health. It doesn't shy away from complex concepts; there's no "dumbing down" of the information presented. I listened to it in "chunks" (while walking the dog :) and that worked for me -- there's so much information packed into each chapter it would be overwhelming to read (or listen to) for hours on end.

I'm glad I also bought the Kindle format because there's so much detail provided about various foods, herbs, supplements, and Kindle notes will make it easy to re-reference specific information.

If you have a dog, I highly recommend The Forever Dog.

Edited to add this interesting CTV interview with the authors:

As the owner to a dog with idiopathic epilepsy, I’ve been forced to seek alternative treatment options for her since typical meds don’t quite do the trick. This book came out at the perfect time for me. The first two sections were very informative, although a bit dense and a little hard to get through. However the third section was packed with usable info including detailed food lists and recipes. I’ve always been a dog owner, and actually work in the animal welfare world, but it took me this long to really think about the food my dogs were eating. I regret not knowing this info sooner. If you love your dog, I would recommend getting this book. Even if you decide to not make any big changes, at least you will be more informed moving forward.

It’s sounds super sciency - there’s a vet, big words and research studies. In reality much of the science is simply non-existent or not applicable. Dr Becker is the veterinary and dog world’s version of Gwyneth Paltrow.

There’s some good stuff in here, unfortunately it is well hidden amongst the garbage.
