Fascinating Millenial period piece of a truly deranged and mentally ill woman who fulfils her delusions. Also makes me feel less bad about spending 600 kr on buying vitamins online after deliberating for only 15 minutes.

Sophie Kinsella is the only author I've read in this genre so far. Becky Bloomwook is an ambiguous heroine. Usually I don't like the person she represents - silly, not much substantial in her head, acting without thinking and only bent on buying new things - but for this book it somehow works for me. Her characteristics are drawn in such a sharp way, that even I can't help but smile at her way. As such this is a nice book which isn't too demanding.

This is a frothy piece of chick lit telling the story of Becky Bloomwood, a 20-something London girl with a shopping problem. I have a fondness for these vulnerable-but-spunky-girl-in-hilarious-situation stories, but this one read all wrong to me because of the intersection of its subject matter and the current world economic situation. I think I would have liked it a lot better if I read it closer to its publication (in 2001) and not in the midst of a serious recession. Reading about Bloomwood's financial irresponsibility and label obsession just didn't sit right with me when so many people are having actual, real financial problems. I do think this book is quite well-crafted and accomplished; the main character especially is disarming and appealing and her narrative voice is just right. It's supposed to be a fun book to read, though, and I just couldn't quite have fun with it.
