The author of this book may be a talented investigator--and the jury's still out on whether it is innate talent or simply an unusual degree of persistence--but he is not even a middling writer. That's probably okay; most people are reading this sort of literature for the content not the style. However, the author's descriptions of his own internal mechanics came off as superficial and, in some places, fabricated or extremely embellished in an effort to improve the narrative.

I had been unaware that so much of the book would be about the author's investigation into the crimes of the so-called Golden State Killer. I had already consumed too much information about that individual.

Interesting in spite of its drawbacks.

I got this book from the library for the cold case information, not his personal life-- as callous as that sounds-- so I skipped over much of the book. Also a lot of the chapters focus on the East Area Rapist which I already know a lot about, so I skipped much of that info also. Some interesting details about crime cases he helped solve, and some crazy ones still left unsolved. Interesting, but not a book I would consider worth sinking hours of my life into.

i understand that this is a memoir but i underestimated how much of his ego this man managed to fit inside of a book. like i don't care about the fact that you're a shitty father and your ex wives hate you but if you're willing to talk about that then atleast try and show that you're working on it?? i wanted to learn about cold cases and i simply did not
