This book is so real, raw, and deep. I like that he talks about both his work, but also the affects his work had on his mental health and personal life. Incredible story.

As someone currently studying a masters in criminology and social research this was the perfect read to round the year off with.
From the beginning of his successful career to retirement - we follow Paul utilising his aspiration to become a phenomenal forensic investigator. Throughout this book we learn about his processes, other amazing individuals he worked alongside and about how they cracked cases many believed would forever remain as cold cases.
Not only does this read like a story
Making it accessible to the masses, it approaches the cases with delicacy and truly does display respect to those who survived or are related to late victims in the cases.
It opened my eyes to serial killers as I never knew how much was behind tracking down the golden state killer nor that he had been known by different names prior to each counties cases being linked. I also liked how it addressed the importance of evidence, with our true killer being someone the masses wouldn’t expect and placing eyes on how some killers uniquely operate.

It was a struggle to stop reading this book and I think it could definitely be best consumed in one sitting. Such an interesting look at a life a career and true crime, really.

This book is quite disturbing. I thought it was a little more focused on the development of classifying serial killers/rapists. It was more of a biography and true crime novel.
I listened to this as an audiobook. I don't think audio was particularly effective medium for this book. I also grew very tired of listening to the author complain about how they could not spend any time with their wife and kids over and over.
A fascinating look into the working life of Paul Holes. There are some brief glimpses into his personal life which I thought were appropriate & well described. His passion for his career & bringing justice to victims & their families is admirable. While the details of the crimes & crime scenes could be graphic, it wasn't for a shock value or bait. They were details that brought you in & made you want to catch the bad guys too.

I listened to this on audio because it was the fastest way for me to get it. It’s nice that it’s read by the author because so many of us are familiar with his voice. However, he sounds a bit stilted and unnatural reading his own words. Nevertheless it’s a really good memoir.
