🌶️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This book is wild—and not just because of the spice (though there’s a lot of that). Jace and Riley meet at a college bar, hook up in a steamy one-night stand, and Jace becomes instantly obsessed. Typical unhinged behaviour follows, but that’s kind of the vibe in this series.

Riley’s backstory, though, is rough. She was groomed and emotionally manipulated by her dad’s best friend, Calum, and while it’s acknowledged in the book, it’s not exactly handled with a ton of depth or care. She’s also dealing with some sort of chronic illness that drains her, but it’s more of a background detail than a focal point.

The plot? Mostly smut, spice, and Jace being a walking red flag. Still, I enjoyed his dynamic with his brother and their group chats, which add some fun. Riley’s trauma makes her complicated, and Jace becomes her safe space—albeit a slightly obsessive one.

As someone who has chronic fatigue syndrome (along with fibromyalgia), I was a little worried when I read that Riley had CFS. I shouldn’t have been though! C.R. Jane did a fantastic job with the representation of this condition and the reality of how it affects your every day life. Jace is a walking red flag in real life. In books though, he was a thoroughly enjoyable MMC. Who doesn’t love a little stalking and manipulation, especially when combined with a man that dotes on her and takes care of her when she is in a flare of her condition. And when her safety is threatened, he is leading the way to protect her. I loved their dynamic and the banter between them!

This is a dark romance and people should read the trigger warnings. While Jace has his absolute prince moments, he's also a little unhinged when it comes to Riley. If you like a book that combines a sports romance, a morally gray MMC, and an FMC that is on the run, you will love this one.
