sexing the cherry is not my favourite jeanette winterson novel, but in every way it should be the favourite of the ones i’ve read. i think oranges… speaks more to me, but this one was such a beautiful study on the way history interacts with the present. there are so many themes and thoughts that have slipped past as i’ve read this, and right now the only thing i can think about is how cool the section in the middle is with the 12 dancing princesses and how fairy tales are queered and distorted through a feminist lens. i think winterson has definitely become one of my favourite authors this year, and i think most of the reason i didn’t like this more is just the time it took me to read it compared to the other two, which i devoured within days. historical fiction doesn’t need to be boring, people have always been interesting and special and fascinating, and she captures the essence of humanity so well, all while never becoming predictable. dog woman is such a sick character, i love how powerful she is. the bit at the end where it is revealed that jordan and his mother reflect/ are connected to people in the present day is fascinating. the story of athena. the significance of the fruit. the significance of the thames. AUGH i love it.

still reeling from this topsy-turvy, metaphysical ride! destabilized laws of place & time; collapsed character concepts across centuries; imagined word-as-atmosphere-scapes, alligator floors, twelve murderous and dancing princesses (murder everywhere actually but like chic?), and new hero: dog-woman, 17th cent mother of 50 dogs & 20th cent mercury contamination advocate. badass!
I wanted to read this properly but I wish I completed it when I had the book

This one was my first one from Jeanette and I have to say as a non-native english speaker, it was difficult to read. I hat to reread some passages. I appreciate her writing style, but i hope other books will be easier to read..

It took me way too long to read this book. I can't say I didn't like it but I also can't say I liked it.
It's very Wintersonian and I enjoyed it for that. The themes are good and explored in an interesting way and the book is very reflective and unusual. The story and narration are loosely built which is nice but also means there wasn't anything pulling me back into them. I'd put the book down and wait forever until picking it up again because I wasn't craving it, wasn't curious to see what happens.
Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it for uni or with a time constraint.

My rating lied. This book is actually 6 stars.
